Advanced coursework and research training

If you want to start a career in a research-related industry, formalise the research skills you’ve developed in the workplace, or are curious about research, the Master of Research (MRes) is an ideal place to start.

Accelerate your ambition

The MRes is our two-year (full-time, or part-time equivalent) research training program. Domestic students complete the first year of the MRes via the Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil), and upon successful completion, will proceed directly to the second year.

Study your area of interest

In the MRes you get to study and research what you are interested in.

We offer the MRes in our four faculties. Choose the one that matches your passion:

Domestic students

International students

You’ll have access to a range of units from a variety of subject areas across the University, allowing you to construct a program relevant to your specific interests.

Whichever discipline you choose, the structure of the program will be the same. In the first year, you’ll undertake advanced coursework units in your area of study. In the second year you’ll specialise in research preparation, focus on a specific research topic and submit a 20,000 word thesis on your area of expertise.

Macquarie is the first Australian university to align with international research training qualifications.

Our MRes is consistent with the ‘Bologna model’, which means we follow the European structure and requirements to ensure our degrees are internationally compatible for both our inbound and outbound students.

This program enables students to complete a PhD in three years – well short of the national average.

The Master of Research exchange program provides you with opportunities to undertake international experiences during your studies. If you continue on to a PhD, opportunities include research collaboration with international universities under our global PhD programs.

At Macquarie you research independently but you’re not alone. Try your hand at the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition to develop your communication skills, or participate in your faculty’s conference dedicated to MRes students. The 2022 Arts Research Frontiers 2 conference was a four-day event with two streams and 76 presentations. Watch the video to learn more about the conference.
