HART, George Vaughan (1752-1832) - Colonel

Army officer and politician

Born: fourth son of Edward Hart (c.1713-1793), of Lynsfort, Donegal and Elizabeth [nee Ramsay].

Commissioned: Ensign (46th Regiment of Foot) 1775; Lieutenant 1777; Captain 1779; Major (75th Regiment) 12 October 1787; Lieutenant-Colonel (75th Regiment) 1 September 1795; Colonel (75th Regiment) 1 January 1798; Major-General 1 January 1805; Lieutenant-General 4 June 1811; General 1825.

Posted to North America; saw action in South Carolina, New York and Pennsylvania in 1776-1777 and in the West Indies 1778-1779; went to India in 1782 as aide-de-camp to General William Medows; in Britain 1783-1788; returned to India 1788 as military secretary and adjutant to Medows at Bombay; also deputy-paymaster-general of the forces (Bombay Presidency); served in the campaigns against Tipu in 1791-1792 (present at the capture of Bangalore and the siege of Seringapatam); served as deputy-paymaster-general in India 1792-1795; returned home to Britain in 1795; returned to India in 1798 as colonel of the 75th Foot. Present at battle of Mallavelly under the command of General Harris; served with a detachment of the Bombay Army after Sedaseer and seized the advanced post of Agrarum where the enfilading batteries were erected for the bombardment of Seringapatam [from the northern bank of the Cauvery River]. For his services in the 1799 campaign against Tipu he was awarded £4,000 worth of prize money.

Immediately after the capture of Seringapatam he was placed in command of Cannara on the Malabar coast, and garrisoned principally at Mangalore. He failed in his bid to become deputy-paymaster to the forces in Ceylon; returned home in disgrace and was found guilty by court-martial and suspended for his role in peculation (of grain supplies) while Commissary to the army of Mysore - the East India Company dismissed him in 1801.

Served on Staff in Ireland as Brigadier after his return to Britain. Appointed Major-General in 1805; Lieutenant-General in 1811. Later served in the House of Commons as the member for Donegal, Ireland (1812-1831). Appointed governor of Londonderry and Culmore in 1820.

Died: 14 June 1832, at Kilderry, Donegal (Ireland).
