June

Thursday 4th. June 1812!
This being the Anniversary of the Birth of our good gracious and beloved monarch I directed it to be observed as a Holiday throughout the Territory of N.S. Wales, and had it celebrated at Sydney with the usual demonstrations of Honor joy & festivity! — I entertained the whole of the Gentlemen, Civil and Military in the Colony – and sat down to a splendid Dinner at 5 OClock in the afternoon, in the large new Dining Room, 73 in number; breaking up at ¼ past 9,O'Clock. — There [...] no Ladies asked to Dinner this Year, Mrs. M. herself being still too unwell to entertain Company. —

Friday 5th. June ! —
I proceeded this morning attended by the Revd. Mr. Marsden Prinl. Chaplain and Revd. Messrs. Cowper & Cartwright Asst. Chaplains & Asst. Surveyor Mr. Meehan to mark out the Scite [sic] of a new Church in George Street close to and to the Southward of the present Burying Ground, which I intend to have built as soon as circumstances will admit; the great Population of the town now requiring a second church. I also marked out some addl. Ground for burying the Dead, joined to the present Ground – and Southward & westward of it. —

I afterwards proceed with the Surveyor to mark out the Line & limits of a Stone Wall intended to be built round the whole of the Military Barracks already erected and intended soon to be so; which Wall I intend shall be Ten feet high – with three Gates – namely to George Street (the principal one) one to Prince Street, and one to York Street. —

Monday 29th. June 1812 !
This day the Ship Phoenix Whaler Commanded by Capt. Parker, anchored in the Harbour in 3 months and 29 days from England, having Sailed from Portsmouth on the 1st. of March last. — She brings English Papers down to the 10th.of February – but no news of any particular importance, farther than that our good and gracious King was still alive; – and our affairs on the Continent going on prosperously. —
