August

Augt. 8.
Thursday! — At 1. P.M. Anchored off and close to the beautiful large Cantonment of Berhampore; landed immediately and proceeded to the House of Major Genl. Rawstorne Commanding here – who received us in the most friendly and hospitable manner possible. — We remained with General Rawstorne this day following. —

Augt. 10.
Saturday! — Set out early this morning on our Voyage – passing close by the fine and Celebrated large City of Moorshadabad.

Augt. 13.
Tuesday! — At Noon today it blew quite a gale of wind on the River – and in a most violent Squall, our Budgerow was drove on the shore against a Bank – and the mast was broke and carried away by the Shock. — This very untoward accident obliging Capt. Michie to return to Berhampore to repair his Vessel, I was Compelled – on account of my being limited for time – to prosecute my Voyage in a small Boat called a Pulwar which Capt. Michie was so good as to lend me. — I accordingly took leave of Capt. Michie at Jungipoor late at Night.

Augt. 14.
and set out early next morning in my Pulwar for Kissengunge. — Passed Sooty at 7. a.m. and entered the Great Ganges – (Sooty terminating the Hoogly Branch of it) at 7. P.M. – it being here very broad and quite a Sea. —

Augt. 19.
Monday! — After a most disagreeable and very unpleasant Voyage of 5 days in crossing the Great Ganges and several small rivers & Creeks that intervened, I at length got into the River Mahanada last night – and at 3 P.M. this day reached Nabobgunge, where I landed and found 24 Bearers belonging to Capt. Davidson waiting to carry me to Kissengunge 24 miles distant — I set out immediately in my Palanquin and arrived at Kissengunge Cantonment at 9,O'Clock at Night, just as Capt. & Mrs. Davidson and a large Party they had were going to sit down to Supper. — They were both most happy to see me – and gave me a most kind and friendly welcome. — Mrs. Davidson was quite delighted with the accounts I gave her of her Brother Lieut. Jno. Campbell, ADC, to Genl. Stuart. — I remained at Kissengunge for 5 Days, and passed my time very pleasantly with Capt. & Mrs. Davidson in riding and walking, and visiting their friends in the Neighbourhood, it being very fine Country. —

Augt. 24.
Saturday! — Capt. & Mrs. Davidson being engaged to pass some time with Genl. Rawstorne and some other Friends down at Berhampore, I set out along with them this day at 1. P.M. for that place in a large Budgerow hired by Capt. Davidson for our conveyance. — We had a most pleasant Trip down the Mahanada and Great Ganges. —

Augt. 31.
At Sooty we fell in and met with our friend Capt. Michie in his repaired Budgerow on his way to Kissengunge; we stopped to dine with him, and remained at Sooty till 9,O'Clock in the morning of the day following – when we took leave of Capt. Michie, and continued our voyage down the Ganges.
