Advancing health equity in cancer-related lymphoedema

Disparity in cancer-related lymphoedema management for multicultural communities is an under-researched area in Australia.

While there were 1.2 million cancer survivors in Australia in 2018, this is projected to grow to 1.9 million by 2040. Survivorship care is an increasing priority for the Australian health system.

With almost 7 million Australians born overseas and 5.8 million speaking a language other than English at home, multicultural communities comprise a large proportion of cancer survivors that require equitable access to and outcomes of cancer-related lymphoedema care.

Project goals

CanHEAL (Advancing health equity in cancer-related lymphoedema) is a three-year program of work, funded through Macquarie University Lighthouse Fellowship. CanHEAL aims to develop equitable, person-centred and responsive lymphoedema care for multicultural communities in Australia impacted by cancer.

Outcome

The project will establish evidence of disparity in care quality and outcomes for multicultural communities impacted by cancer-related lymphoedema and produce co-designed solutions with them to improve lymphoedema care.
