Macquarie University Art Gallery has invited three of the country’s leading writer’s/poets to come together at this distinguished occasion, joining us in celebration of one of Australia’s leading photographers Juno Gemes in her first survey exhibition. The Quiet Activist: Juno Gemes Survey 1979 – 2019 has been uniquely produced by Macquarie University Art Gallery.

Juno has a long connection to the literary world. She worked as a publisher and between 1987 and 2010 as Co-Director with Robert Adamson of the award-winning Publishing company Paper Bark Press. Instrumental in putting Australian poets and writers in the national spotlight, Paper Bark Press proudly published Untold Tales by David Malouf among its 46 titles.

In 1997 ‘The Language of Oysters’ published by Craftsman House/ Fine Arts Press was launched by David Malouf at the State Library of NSW. Subsequently ‘The Language of Oysters’ was launched by photographer Robert Whitaker on an international scale at Australia House in London to further critical acclaim.

Juno and Robert have mentored many young poets and photographers including Judith Crispin who invited Juno to write the Foreword for her book ‘Lumen Seed’ published by Daylight Books, New York.

This special reading in association with the exhibition The Quiet Activist: Juno Gemes Survey 1979 – 2019 brings these elements of the artist’s history together by inviting these distinguished writers to read at MUAG as a backdrop to the exhibition.
