In 2016 Universities Australia (UA) developed the Respect. Now. Always. campaign in response to the Australian screening of the documentary The Hunting Ground which raised issues about the incidence and institutional handling of sexual assault and sexual harassment of university students.

Macquarie University partnered with UA and developed a cultural change project under the same name, which was launched in August 2016. Since then, there has been a dedicated project team working across the organisation to improve individual and organisational capacity to prevent and respond to sexual assault and sexual harassment of students.

In late 2016, thousands of Australian university students were asked to participate in Australia’s first-ever national prevalence survey on university student experiences of sexual assault and sexual harassment. The leaders of all 39 Australian universities asked the Australian Human Rights Commission to investigate the nature and scale of these behaviours.

On 1 August 2017, survey findings will be released and published in a national report by the Commission. The results will give Australian universities a clearer evidence base to guide further work to prevent and address sexual assault and sexual harassment. It is a critical part of the university Respect. Now. Always. campaign that aims to keep university students safe.

This work is led by Vice Chancellor S Bruce Dowton, and two executive sponsors, Professor Kevin Jameson and Nicole Gower, HR Director. More information about Macquarie University’s Respect. Now. Always. campaign can be found here.
