Our Youth in Taiwan: film screening and conversation with director Yue Fu

13 November 2019

5:30 pm - 8:45 pm

Theatre 1, 10 Hadenfield Avenue, Macquarie University

Organised by the Faculty of Arts Activism, Rights and Justice research stream

‘Our Youth in Taiwan’ is a documentary which explores the experiences of activists in the Sunflower Student Movement in 2014, the biggest social movement in Taiwan in the past 24 years. It was the winner of the Golden Horse Award for best documentary in 2018.

Stories of bidding farewell to one’s youth and growing up are commonplace. The dream shared by the protagonists in the film is to build a better country by rebelling against the establishment. However, their fight becomes part of history in the turbulent relations between Taiwan and China. The film documents individual experiences as part of the wider movement, and highlights the inherent complexities in undertaking collective action.

After the screening the director of the film, Yue Fu, will join us in conversation via video link.

Light refreshments served from 5.30pm and screening will begin at 6pm.

This event is free and forms part of a workshop on ‘Modes of Activism under Authoritarian Governance Regimes in the Asia Pacific’ sponsored by the Faculty of Arts and the Centre for Agency, Values and Ethics (CAVE). The film screening is co-sponsored by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Sydney and Taiwan Film Festival in Sydney.
