Lighthouse Lecture Series: Culture in Financial Institutions – What Kind Works?

24 October 2019

4:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Macquarie University City Campus, Level 24, 123 Pitt Street

Since the global financial crisis, financial institutions have worked to implement a strong ‘risk culture’. Yet the conduct identified and criticised by the Hayne Royal Commission points to serious deficiencies of culture. Does this mean that risk culture is the wrong way to approach misconduct? Or is it that attempts to create a risk culture have just not worked? New research from Macquarie Business School sheds new light on this problem, identifying the kind of organisational culture that is most likely to reduce misconduct toward customers.

More research on topics related to financial services misconduct, and how to prevent it, is much needed. How can the industry and the academy work together more effectively to solve these problems? What are the questions that the industry wants to collaborate on?

Presentation: Professor Elizabeth Sheedy, Macquarie Business School

Moderator: Sally Patten, Editor of Boss, Australian Financial Review.
