Fiona Burton and Susan Vickery, Interim University Librarians, invite you and a guest to the exhibition opening of Juno Gemes: The Quiet Activist A Survey Exhibition 1979 – 2019 on Friday 10 May 2019 at 6pm.

Curators: Rhonda Davis and Kate Hargraves

To be opened by Dr Rod Pattenden, artist and art historian and Moshe Rosenzveig OAM, Festival Director, Head On Photo Festival

This survey exhibition is drawn from Juno Gemes’ extensive archive of photography, film and artist’s books along with national and international publications that feature her works. The exhibition presents a rare opportunity to view Gemes’ early experimental works in film and photography, together with the master prints contained within the celebrated publication The Language of Oysters, 1997, on display to the public for the first time. The overall parameters of the exhibition offer a broader view of Gemes’ social justice commitments over a lifetime’s work.

The spectacular forms of Bush Pieta, a finalist in the 2005 Blake Prize, is remarkable in its evocation of place, time and history − another five works from this series augments the installation. Gemes’ significant body of work Proof: Portraits from the Movement, 1979-2003, is recontextualised within this survey linking Gemes’ early works to her current practice.

The exhibition will also be promoted through the Head On photo festival which is running from the 15-20 May 2019. Visit headon.com.au.

Oysters at the opening kindly supplied by Hawkesbury River Oyster Shed Mooney Mooney.

We hope you can join us.
