Transforming Macquarie’s Curriculum Development – Indigenous Connected Curriculum

29 May 2019

ÿAÿohe Pau ka ÿIke i ka Hälau Hoÿokahi – Not all knowledge is learned in one school.

Anthony Fraser will lead this presentation which will focus on developing Macquarie University as an Indigenous place of learning showing examples of how Hawaiians have managed the approach to culture-based education and how this approach and Indigenous education philosophies can transform Macquarie’s curriculum development.

A significant issue for Native Hawaiians is the notion of sovereignty: Sovereignty in terms of nationhood, land, food, and teaching and learning. These items are intertwined and evident in that they help to drive approaches to teaching and learning, such as Culture-Based education, and ÿÄina-Based education. These critical pedagogies move away from the educational belief that curricula and pedagogy are the most important influences in Hawaiian education. Derived from critical pedagogy, these approaches demonstrate the use of an education framework to scaffold identity and sense of place from a clearly articulated educational philosophy.

A Hawaiian education philosophy employs elements relating to Loina (values), ÿOiaÿio (reality) and ÿIke (knowledge). Drawing on the work of Hewett (1988) and Meyer (1988), this philosophy is used to construct a Hawaiian approach to teacher education. This session will profile the Kahoÿiwai Teacher Education Program and examples from the Native Hawaiian Charter School Movement to demonstrate the implementation of teaching and learning activities drawn from the philosophical foundations of the cultural group.

Following the presentation you will have the opportunity to discuss how Indigenous education philosophies can transform curriculum development through a Q&A Session with Dr Michael Donovan, Academic Director, Indigenous Learning & Teaching, Walanga Muru and Associate Professor Tiffany Jones, Department of Educational Studies. This event is proudly sponsored by Walanga Muru, Macquarie University. You will have the opportunity to network over light snacks and refreshments after the Q&A.

We hope you can join us.
