Where research, care and discovery come together

Australia’s first fully integrated institute for dementia, Parkinson’s disease and motor neuron disease (MND) – bringing together specialist clinics, research programs and clinical trials in one dedicated facility.

Three conditions, one dedicated institute

Neurodegeneration is one of the defining health challenges of our time.

  • Dementia – More than one million Australians are expected to live with dementia by 2065. Our research targets prevention, earlier diagnosis and better treatment.
  • Parkinson’s disease – The fastest growing neurological condition in the world. We offer specialist care, research programs and access to clinical trials.
  • Motor neuron disease – No cure exists. Average survival is two to three years from diagnosis. Our MND clinic and research program are working to change that.

Better research means better treatments, better care and better lives. When research, care and discovery come together, we can improve patient lives.

Together we are stronger than neurodegenerative disease

What we offer

At the Macquarie University Brain Institute and Clinic, we bring together compassionate clinical care, world-class research, access to clinical trials and training of the next generation of specialists. All this within a single dedicated institute.

We believe that the fastest path to better outcomes for patients is the connection between all of these.

Our specialist clinicians work with patients and families from diagnosis through every stage of their journey.

We provide:

Our researchers – both clinicians and scientists – are working to move discoveries from the lab into the clinic.

Our scientists lead lab-based research into the causes of neurodegenerative disease, while clinician-researchers translate those discoveries into clinical trials – giving today’s patients direct access to the latest trials and a role in shaping tomorrow’s treatments.

Join our:

  • active clinical trial program
  • genomic and biomarker studies
  • research clinic participation.

The institute’s connection to Macquarie University creates a direct pathway from student to specialist.

We offer:

  • clinical and research placements
  • fellowship pathways in MND, Parkinson’s and dementia
  • PhD and postgraduate research opportunities.
My dear husband Kevin suffered with advanced dementia for 17 years. This devastating condition affected the last quarter of our life together. I support this research not just to find a cure. It’s also about finding treatments that alleviate symptoms, prolong lives and improve the quality of those lives – both the patients and their families too.
