Human-first, mission-led, quality-driven

Macquarie University recognises Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a strategic enabler that can enhance growth, efficiency and innovation across education, research, healthcare and community engagement.

The University’s approach is:

  • human-centred
  • mission-aligned
  • grounded in quality, integrity and ethical responsibility.

The University invests in building AI capability in all staff through targeted training, guidance and support, enabling staff to experiment, co-develop solutions, and actively contribute to the responsible, ethical and impactful adoption of AI.

Our ethical use of AI principles

The University’s eight ethical AI principles are outlined in our Responsible and Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence Policy.

Macquarie University recognises that not every technological capability warrants adoption. Strategic decisions involving AI are made with care, balancing innovation with caution and informed judgement. AI is adopted where it demonstrably creates value, and avoided where risks, ethics or purpose may be compromised.

The University is committed to empowering its people, applying rigorous evaluation and maintaining transparency about AI’s benefits and limitations. We aim to ensure that technology serves the University’s mission without compromising integrity, trust or human judgement.

The University will:

  • use AI as an enabling technology that supports, not replaces, human capability
  • equip staff with the tools and skills to innovate responsibly
  • apply rigorous evaluation before scaling AI initiatives
  • measure and transparently report on outcomes
  • continue to assess and adapt AI use in line with community and sector needs.

The University seeks to avoid:

  • adopting AI for novelty or trend alone
  • investing in tools without clear principles and demonstratable value
  • accepting closed, non-interoperable systems or disproportionate vendor reliance
  • continuing to use AI that fails privacy, security, safety or integrity requirements regardless of performance claims.

Macquarie University adopts AI thoughtfully and in alignment with its mission to deliver excellence in education, research and healthcare. AI is viewed as a practical tool to:

  • extend human capability
  • improve service delivery
  • strengthen the University’s societal impact.

Responsible adoption requires alignment with the University’s ethical foundations, balancing innovation with transparency, fairness and community trust. Strong governance ensures accountability and human oversight at every stage, while disciplined investment focuses on measurable outcomes and long-term value.

By integrating ethics, quality, responsibility and financial prudence, the University reinforces its purpose:

  • advancing knowledge
  • improving lives
  • upholding the values that define higher education.
