Dr Martin Parkinson AC PSMFASSA FIPAA
Appointed pursuant to Section 8H of the Macquarie University Act 1989. Current term to October 2023.
Dr Martin Parkinson was appointed the Chancellor of Macquarie University in October 2019. He previously served as Secretary to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet between January 2016 and August 2019 and as the Secretary to the Australian Treasury from March 2011 to December 2014. Prior to this, Parkinson served as inaugural Secretary of the Department of Climate Change from its establishment in December 2007.
Parkinson is a director of O’Connell Street Associates and a member of the Founding Group of the Male Champions of Change, a group of male Chairs, CEOs and NEDs committed to the advancement of women into senior leadership positions in the private and public sectors.

He has also been a member of Prime Minister Abbott’s Business Advisory Council, Prime Minister Gillard’s Australia’s Asian Century Strategic Advisory Board, the Policy Committee of Australia’s leading domestic think tank, the Grattan Institute, and the Australian Federal Police Future Directions Advisory Board.

Parkinson holds a PhD and a MA from Princeton University, a MEc from the Australian National University and a BEc (Hons 1) from the University of Adelaide. In May 2015, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of the University (honoris causa) by the University of Adelaide.

Appointed to the University Council by the Minister for Education and Training pursuant to section 8G of the Macquarie University Act 1989 for a term of office commencing 1 January 2017 and concluding on 31 December 2020.
Reappointed to the University Council by the Minister for Education and Training pursuant to section 8G of the Macquarie University Act 1989 for a term of office to commence on 1 January 2021 and expire on 31 December 2024.
Louise Mason graduated from Macquarie in 1989 and has held various roles in the property industry at Lend Lease, AMP Capital and Stockland. Currently Mason is Group Executive and CEO Commercial Property at Stockland. The role covers all aspects of the management of Stockland’s retail, office, logistics and business park assets and a staff of 500.
With 28 years’ experience in real estate, Mason was previously Chief Operating Officer for Real Estate at AMP Capital and held other roles over 13 years with the organisation including Head of Development and Managing Director of Office and Industrial.
Mason is a member of Stockland’s Executive Committee. In 2016, Mason was elected NSW President of the Property Council Australia.
Professor S Bruce DowtonMB BS MD FACMG FRACP
Ex officio member; appointed pursuant to Section 8H of the Macquarie University Act 1989. Current term to 2 September 2024.
The Vice-Chancellor and President was appointed to the role in 2012 and serves as the chief executive officer of the University, with overall responsibility for its academic, research, administrative, financial and development strategies. He is tasked with promoting the interests and furthering the development of the University.
Prior to his appointment Professor Dowton served as a senior medical executive having held a range of positions in universities, health care and consulting organisations in many settings around the world. He also served as a paediatrician at the Massachusetts General Hospital for Children, and as Clinical Professor of Paediatrics at Harvard Medical School.
Professor Jacqueline PhillipsBVSC (HONS; U SYD) PHD (ANU)
Ex officio member; appointed pursuant to Section 8H of the Macquarie University Act 1989. Current term to 30 June 2023.
Professor Jacqueline Phillips is professor of Neurophysiology in the Department of Biomedical Science, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences.
Phillips joined Macquarie University in 2009 and became a member of Academic Senate as an elected representative for the then Faculty of Human Sciences in 2013. She was elected Deputy Chair of Academic Senate in 2015 and Chair in 2020.
Phillips first trained as a veterinarian at the University of Sydney. After a period in small animal practice, she went back to study and gained her PhD from the Australian National University. Phillips undertook postdoctoral and academic positions in New Zealand and Perth, developing her research program in autonomic and sensory neuroscience, focusing on the complex relationships between the brain and cardiovascular system. Her recent work has addressed these relationships in association with chronic kidney disease, aiming to reduce the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke in these patients.
Phillips has significant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience and has supervised PhD, Honours and MRes students to successful completion of their research programs.
As well as her governance expertise in the University sector she holds board and executive positions with Government Panels, scientific societies and not-for-profit organisations, and has been actively involved in outreach partnerships with schools and community organisations.
BEC MACQ
Appointed to the University Council by the Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education section 8G of the Macquarie University Act 1989. Current term commencing 11 November 2019 and concluding on 10 November 2023.
Michael Book is a Chartered Accountant and worked at UBS Australia Group for 15 years in senior finance roles including 10 years as CFO.
Book has experience in complex accounting transactions, business advice, restructurings, treasury and capital management. His experience covers both global organisations and start-up businesses.
Book has extensive experience in Asia where he led diverse teams across the region. He has significant change management experience leading major projects covering systems, business processes, controls and organisational change in Australia and Asia. Book has also served on a number of NFP boards.
Associate Professor Wylie BradfordAcademic Staff member elected under section 8D of the Macquarie University Act 1989. Current term commencing 1 January 2018 and concluding on 31 December 2021.
Associate Professor Wylie Bradford has been at Macquarie since 1996, which makes him possibly the longest serving Indigenous staff member at the University. He has had a great deal of exposure to governance and other aspects of University life in the past decade, with six years as a member of the University Council.
Bradford has been a member of Academic Senate for the past seven years and has recently been elected as the Deputy Chair. He has also participated in Senate Learning and Teaching Committee and Academic Standards and Quality Committee matters, as well as serving as the Director of Students in the former Faculty of Business and Economics (now the Macquarie Business School) for five years.
Bradford has been a member of the Branch Committee of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) since 2008 and a member of the NTEU bargaining team in the last two rounds of enterprise bargaining.
Chum Darvall AMBA (MACQ), SF FINSIA & FAICD
Graduate Member appointed by Council pursuant to Section 8E of the Macquarie University Act 1989. Current term from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2022.
Chum Darvall is a non-executive director for a range of companies, Government and not for profit organisations. He had a successful executive career in financial markets and banking for 30 years from 1981-2011. Darvall was CEO of Deutsche Bank in Australia and New Zealand from July 2002 to March 2011. During this period, Deutsche Bank’s business expanded and consolidated as one of the leading investment banks in Australia and New Zealand. Darvall was Chairman of TransGrid from 2012 until its successful sale by the NSW State Government in late 2015. Some of Darvall’s current Directorships include Chair of Resimac Group Ltd, Chair of Lens10 Pty Ltd, and Director of Port of Portland Pty Ltd.
Darvall represented Australia in the 1978 Commonwealth Games and won a bronze medal in the 4 x 400m relay. In 2007 Darvall received the Kerry Packer award by the Australian Cricketer’s Association for service to the ACA Player Hardship Fund. In 2014 Darvall was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to the finance and banking sector and through contributions to not-for-profit organisations and the performing arts.
Darvall is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Senior Fellow of FINSIA. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Macquarie University.
Academic Staff member elected under section 8D of the Macquarie University Act 1989. Current term commencing 1 January 2016 and concluding on 31 December 2021.
In 2011, Professor Catherine Dean joined Macquarie University as the inaugural Head and Director of the Physiotherapy Program and has since also been appointed as Head of Department of Health Professions. The department was established in the Faculty of Human Sciences but since has moved to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Catherine is currently Deputy Dean and Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Previously, Dean worked as an academic at the University of Sydney and has held academic leadership roles across a number of health professions. Dean has comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Australian higher education and healthcare sectors and has developed strong links with public and private health providers in the community, education and welfare sectors.
Benjamin DougallBA, LLB (MACQ) / MPPP (MACQ)
Professional Staff member elected under section 8D of the Macquarie University Act 1989. Current term commencing 1 January 2021 and concluding on 31 December 2022.
Benjamin Dougall joined Macquarie University as a Policy Officer within Governance Services in 2016. Prior to joining Macquarie, Dougall worked at Legal Aid NSW for more than five years in policy, project, and compliance roles, including as Senior Project Officer within the Community Legal Centre (CLC) Program.
Dougall is a graduate of Macquarie University having completed a Bachelor of Arts with the degree of Bachelor of Laws (BA, LLB) in 2010 and a Master of Politics and Public Policy (MPPP) in 2018. He has a Diploma of Management (Martin College) and is an International Baccalaureate (IB) graduate from the Lester B Pearson, United World College of the Pacific in Canada.
Dougall has been a member of the Branch Committee of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) since 2018 and is also an NTEU representative on the Professional Staff Implementation Committee (PSIC) established under the enterprise agreement.
Deborah Green AMBSS, MA (HISTORY)
Council Member appointed by Council under Section 8F of the Macquarie University Act. Current term to 19 April 2024.
Deborah Green has extensive experience in the health sector as a CEO and Board Director, including directorships with St Vincent’s Health (Melbourne and Sydney), Catholic Health Australia, South East Sydney Area Health Service and the Australian Hospital and Healthcare Association. She was also an independent director of the Migration Institute of Australia.
During her career, Green has held many executive leadership roles including as CEO of South East Sydney Area Health Service for eight years – which, at the time, was Australia’s largest area health services with 14,000 staff across six tertiary hospitals and an annual turnover of $1 billion. Green has provided high level advice to Ministers and the Director General on implementation of Government policy, capital redevelopment, adverse events and clinical issues. She has secured funding for mental health services at Randwick, St George and Sutherland, and was instrumental in setting up a breast-screening clinic at David Jones.
In 2009, Green was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to medical administration as a health care executive in public and private sectors and development of professional standards.
Green is a director of Macquarie University Hospital and a member of the Hospital’s Clinical Risk and Safety Committee and the University’s Audit and Risk Committee. Through her voluntary contributions she assists Homeless Healthcare St Vincent’s and the Victims and Witness Support Service.
Green holds a Bachelor of Social Studies and Master of Arts (History) from the University of Sydney.
BA, MA, MASTER OF COMMERCIAL LAW (MACQ), MAICD
Council Member appointed by Council under Section 8F of the Macquarie University Act. Current term to 29 February 2024.
Deborah Hadwen has extensive experience in Information Technology within the corporate and government sectors in Australia and Asia and is a company director. She was previously Chief Executive Officer, Australia and New Zealand for Tata Consultancy Services Limited (TCS), a global leader in IT services, digital and business solutions. In this role, Hadwen led business growth to over $800M in revenue and grew a team to over 12,500 staff servicing Australian customers in the delivery and support of systems across most technology areas. Prior to TCS, she held several commercial roles at Compuware Asia Pacific Pty Ltd and IBM Australia.
Hadwen is currently Non-Executive Director at Ambition Group (ASX: AMB), a global recruitment consultancy, a member of its Audit and Risk Committee and Chair of the Remuneration Committee.
She was a Finalist for the Telstra Business Woman of the Year in 2011 and a Finalist for the CEO Magazine, IT Executive of the Year in 2015. Hadwen holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from the University of Sydney, a Master in Commercial Law from Macquarie University and is a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Member appointed by Council pursuant to Section 8F of the Macquarie University Act 1989. Current term to 28 February 2023.
Jingmin Qian is a company director and corporate adviser with rich experience on Asia. Qian is a Director of Jing Meridian Advisory, specialising on strategy, Mergers and Acquisitions, Joint Venture negotiation and cross-cultural management with Asian investors and partners. Previously she held executive roles with Boral Limited, Leighton Holdings and LEK Consulting. Qian started her career at Ministry of Commerce in Beijing, working with AusAID and the UN on projects in more than twenty provinces in China.
Qian is a non-executive director of Abacus Property Group (ABP.AX), a Trustee of Club Plus Super, and a director of the Australia China Business Council (ACBC). Qian joined Macquarie University Council in March 2015, after serving on the Advisory Board of Department of Marketing and Management for two years.
Qian holds a Bachelor Degree of Economics from the University of International Business and Economics, Beijing, and an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management, UNSW and University of Sydney. Qian is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a CFA Charter holder.
Jayden WhaitesStudent Member appointed by Council pursuant to 8D of the Macquarie University Act 1989. Current term commencing 1 June 2021 to 31 May 2023.
Jayden Whaites is currently completing a Bachelor of Information Technology with a Bachelor of Laws, Majoring in Cyber Security. He has served as the representative for Science and Engineering, and Chairperson of the Student Representative committee. He is highly engaged with student life on campus, having served on the executive of many student societies including, most recently, as President of the Rural and Regional Students Society.
In his role as a member of the Council, Jayden is excited to facilitate the resurrection of student life on campus following the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that Macquarie University delivers the best quality campus experience.

Graduate Member appointed by Council pursuant to Section 8E of the Macquarie University Act 1989. Current term to 28 February 2023.
John Wigglesworth is a Chartered Accountant and has been a partner at KPMG since 1997. During this career with KPMG, Wigglesworth has worked with many leading Australian and international companies and specialising in external and internal audit, the design of accounting systems and controls, the application of IFRS and risk management.
Wigglesworth has extensive experience working with businesses across the Asia Pacific region. He is the national leader of KPMG’s Global Japanese Practice in Australia and spent three years on secondment to KPMG Thailand in the late 1990s through the period of the Asian Financial Crisis.
Wigglesworth is also a director of Macquarie University Hospital.

Frank Zipfinger is the Chairman of Buchan Architects and of Vecor Limited. He is also the Chairman of the Teter Mek Foundation and of Oneland Programs Limited.
Zipfinger is a member of the Executive Committee of the St Joseph’s College Indigenous Fund and of the Board of the St Joseph’s College Foundation. He is Deputy Chairman of the Melbourne Business School, President of The Ski Lodges Organisation of Perisher, Smiggins and Guthega Inc., and a Board member of The Northcare Foundation at Royal North Shore Hospital.
Zipfinger has over 35 years’ experience in the property industry. He was formerly a Partner in the Sydney office of Mallesons Stephen Jaques (now King and Wood Mallesons) where he specialised in property investment and development. He was the Chairman of Mallesons Stephen Jaques from 1 February 2005 until 30 June 2010 and Chairman of Mallesons in the Community. Prior to this appointment, Zipfinger completed more than five years in various roles as a Managing Partner with the firm. He is currently a consultant to the firm.
Zipfinger is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
