QILT Surveys

The Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) is a suite of national surveys established by the Federal Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment, which cover the student life cycle from commencement to employment. The aggregated results from QILT surveys are published on the Government’s QILT website to provide prospective students with relevant information about their higher education study options. The information from these surveys is used by the University to improve students' experiences and quality improvement initiatives for the University.

The QILT suite includes:

  • Student experience survey (SES)
  • Graduate outcomes survey (GOS)
  • Graduate outcomes survey - Longitudinal (GOS-L)
  • Employer satisfaction survey (ESS)

Student Experience

Student Experience Survey (SES) (formerly the University Experience Survey) is an annual survey that collects information about the experience and engagement of current undergraduate and postgraduate students at Australian universities.

The survey data informs policy formulation, strategic planning and quality improvement initiatives for the University, the higher education sector and the Australian Government.

The survey focuses on five components of students' learning experiences: Teaching Quality, Skills Development, Learner Engagement, Student Support, and Learning Resources and Overall quality of educational experience.  The SES also asks whether students considered leaving university prior to completing their degree and about the reasons for doing so.

Scope of the SES

The SES is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students who are currently enrolled in the first or final year of their degree at an Australian higher education institution. A random sample of students is selected to receive the survey, on the basis of their institution and the field of education of their course. The survey is distributed during the second semester of each year.

Administration of the SES

The survey is currently administered nationally by the Social Research Centre (SRC).


A selection of data from Macquarie University undergraduate students surveyed in 2019 can be seen below. In 2019, students rated Macquarie highly on overall quality of educational experience, teaching quality and learning resources.

The graph below shows that most students rated the quality of teaching at Macquarie as 'good' or 'excellent'. In addition, to this, the vast majority of students (93 per cent) reported that their teachers seemed helpful and approachable.

Overall, more than 87 per cent of students (well above the all-universities sector average) expressed satisfaction with the quality of learning resources provided by the University. Most students were very positive about the quality of the library resources and facilities and the quality of online learning materials provided, with 88 per cent rating them as 'good' or 'excellent'.

Some of the services the University improved on from last year were quality of the student spaces or common areas and support with induction/orientation activities.

This feedback, and much more, is used to improve the quality of the student experience at Macquarie University.

Graduate Outcome

The Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS) collects information from graduates about their study experiences and the type of work or further study being undertaken after completing a qualification. From 2015, the GOS replaced the Australian Graduate Survey (AGS).

The scope of the GOS

The GOS is aimed at all graduates who completed an undergraduate, postgraduate coursework or postgraduate research degree four to six months prior to the release of the survey.

Administration of the GOS

The GOS is conducted nationally by The Social Research Centre (SRC), on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment, in three rounds each year.  Reference periods for the GOS survey rounds (based on course completion month) are shown below:

  • Student completions in March to July (inclusive) are included in the GOS – November round.
  • Student completions in August, September and October (inclusive of the preceding year) are included in the GOS – February round.
  • Student completions in November to February (inclusive) should be included in the GOS – May round.

Graduate Outcome - L

The Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS) has a longitudinal component –Graduate Outcomes Survey - Longitudinal (GOS-L) –in order to examine the outcomes of graduates over a longer term.  The GOS survey instrument is used for the GOS-L.

The scope of the GOS-L

Graduates who responded to the GOS are followed up by the Social Research Centre (SRC) three years after the original survey, provided that consent for participation in future research was provided by the graduates.

Administration of the GOS-L

The GOS-L is administered every year for a duration of three years after graduation. The first round of the GOS-L, surveying 2012 graduates, was conducted in February 2016.

Employer Satisfaction

The final component of QILT is the ESS, which surveys the employers of university graduates and directly links the experiences of graduates to the feedback of their direct supervisors. This feedback from supervisors includes details about generic skills, technical skills and work readiness of the graduate employed in their workplace.

The scope of the ESS

The survey sample for the ESS is collected from the graduate responses in the GOS.  During the GOS, employed graduates are asked to provide the contact details of their employer or supervisor for the purpose of the ESS. The employer is contacted about the ESS after the completion of the GOS fieldwork. For details please see here .
