Jemma Geoghegan, a NSW Young Tall Poppy
Congratulations to evolutionary biologist Dr Jemma Geoghegan, from the Department of Biological Sciences, who has been awarded a NSW Young Tall Poppy Science Award.
Jemma’s research looks at the drivers of virus diversity, ecology and evolution, including how viruses can infect new host species and lead to the emergence of new diseases.
“The potential for viruses to spill over to novel host species by cross-species transmission is becoming increasingly apparent,” she says.
“My research focuses on the evolutionary processes that might allow novel pathogens to adapt to new hosts; and the potential barriers to host adaptation."
