Welcome from the Head of Department

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The Department was formed in mid 2018 as a result of the merger of the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics. The new Department represents a continuation of the traditions of the disciplines of Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics at Macquarie University. This is an exciting time for Mathematics and Statistics at Macquarie, and the beginning of a journey into the future. Come along and join us on this journey.

Professor Jim Denier
Head of Departmen

Mathematics and Statistics are the languages of our technological society. They are used in a wide range of existing, and future, careers and are highly sought-after skill: employers are always looking for candidates with the problem-solving, logical-thinking and quantitative and data analytical skills that degrees in mathematics and statistics provide.

Why study Mathematics and Statistics?

In the 2017 CareerCast report, four of the top 10 best jobs were built on mathematics: these were statistician, data scientist, operations research analyst and mathematician. The study evaluated income, outlook, environmental factors, stress, and physical demands for 200 professions across a wide variety of industries, salary ranges, and skill levels.
