About these microcredentials

Microcredentials are a short, flexible and affordable way to update your skills in targeted areas. The Learning technologies in practice study unit offers teachers and school leaders an opportunity to gain advanced knowledge in a wide range of digital learning technologies.

The unit consists of ten modules. Participants may register for multiple modules, or only one. By completing all ten modules of Learning technologies in practice, you may also earn full credit towards EDCN865, one of the twelve units in the Master of Education degree.

NESA Registration

Each module is a NESA registered course that contributes to 15 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 2.6.2, 3.4.2, 6.2.2, 6.3.2 and 7.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Study Guide

Technological advances are rapid and widespread—so how can teachers use these tools to optimise learning?

The modules below delve into the research foundations of technology-enhanced learning so that practicing educators can adopt evidence-based approaches to incorporating technology into the classroom.

We envisage that the modules will be open for enrolment for semester 2, 2020.

Each module requires:

  • core background reading
  • a one-hour webinar (recording available)
  • a discussion forum contribution demonstrating critical reflection on concepts from the module (worth 50% of module marks)
  • an ePortfolio post showcasing your ability to apply the module’s learnings (worth 50% of module marks)

Understanding TPACK in context

Elevate your educational practice when you integrate current technological skills and knowledge.

You will:

  • reflect on the need to develop students’ digital learning skills within the curriculum
  • examine what teachers’ TPACK capabilities look like in practice, and apply approaches for improving technology-enhanced learning design
  • explore current and emerging technologies making learning more accessible, responsive and impactful.

Pedagogy and technology-enhanced learning

Build your strategic understanding of technology-enhanced learning design with an in-depth exploration of the relationship between technology and pedagogy.

You will:

  • examine key pedagogical perspectives and strategies in the context of learning with technology
  • select, adapt and create pedagogical strategies that can be applied that teachers can apply to optimise learning when using technology.

Technology affordances and multimedia learning effects

Develop your approach to technology-enhanced learning when you delve into the key concepts of technology affordances and multimedia learning effects, guided by recent research and examples of effective practice.

You will:

  • explore technology affordances as a way of thinking about technology-enhanced learning design and technology selection
  • undertake affordance analysis of technology tools, identifying how they can be leveraged in their educational context
  • apply and critique research-based strategies for using multimedia in learning designs.

Representing and sharing content using technology

Develop and apply approaches to effectively representing and sharing content using technology, taking into account the different requirements of subject areas, assessment, and the broader shift towards open education.

You will:

  • explore the ways content can be best represented and shared in particular disciplines
  • investigate how technology-based learning can be used to advance different thinking processes and types of knowledge
  • reflect on influential movements and trends shaping the way educational resources are delivered, including open education.

Design thinking and learning design

Combine design thinking strategies with the meaningful use of technology to design learning experiences which promote your students’ fundamental thinking and creative problem solving capabilities.

You will:

  • explore the intersection between design thinking and learning design
  • compare different education design models, reflecting on their utility and how the field of learning design has evolved
  • evaluate approaches to describing and sharing digital learning designs using current tools and examples.

Designing for learning using online technologies

Discover the latest research developments relating to online technologies helping educators provide more interactive, collaborative and creative learning experiences.

You will:

  • compare the eras known as ‘Web 1.0’ and ‘Web 2.0’, focusing on how technological developments have shaped learning
  • analyse the potentials and constraints of a vast range of numerous web tools in educational contexts, including essential safety and legal issues
  • articulate and apply design recommendations for learning and teaching using current online tools

Designing for learning using social networking approaches

Understand the substantial power and nuanced issued of social networking tools and platforms in education with this research-led, design-focused module.

You will:

  • evaluate social networking tools commonly used in education, identifying ways of leveraging possible affordances
  • use data and research to understand big picture trends affecting education, and reflecting on areas for further investigation
  • explore critical issues relating to social networking use in K-12 classrooms.

Designing for mobile learning

Understand the possibilities and limitations of using mobile devices to enable authentic, personalised and flexible learning experiences anytime and anywhere.

You will:

  • examine research and case studies to identify benefits of mobile devices according to the context of their use
  • delve into the variety of issues associated with mobile device use in classrooms
  • analyse and reflect upon opportunities to use mobile devices in your educational practice.

Designing for learning using virtual worlds

Equip yourself with the knowledge and first-hand experience needed to understand and design for future learning in virtual and simulated spaces.

You will:

  • critique key definitions and characteristics of virtual worlds, comparing current platforms and their potential in educational contexts
  • explore essential issues relating to the use of virtual worlds in the classroom
  • articulate design recommendations for learning and teaching with current virtual tools.

Futures and implications

Explore the future of learning technology by extrapolating trends throughout history and abstracting design principles from current research.

You will:

  • distil learning design principles from your knowledge across types of online, social, mobile and virtual learning technologies
  • examine future-oriented research to assess the potential uses of emerging technologies for learning
  • reflect on the role of educators and researchers in the continuing evolution of educational technologies
