Phonics Debate 2018

Distinguished Professor Anne Castles and Dr. Jennifer Buckingham participated in a discussion/debate held on 31 July 2018, hosted by the Australian College of Educators and the Centre for Independent Studies in an effort to roll out phonics instruction for effective teaching of reading and writing in high performing schools.

Distinguished Professor Anne Castles was also featured in The Australian regarding teaching children to read using phonics. She said the quality and scope of scientific evidence available meant "reading wars should be over".

She also said prevailing myths about phonics instruction - such as it taught children fake words, was boring and interfered with reading comprehension - prevailed despite being debunked.
