The Centre for Middle East and North African Studies is committed to promoting a greater understanding of the history, politics, and culture of the Middle East.
Primary areas of interest include democratisation in the Middle East and North Africa, regional and international politics, Arab-African relations, and the recent history of the Middle East and North Africa.
The Centre is staffed by scholars of the Middle East and North Africa from the Department of Modern History, Politics and International Relations and draws on the expertise of scholars from a range of other disciplines including Anthropology, Critical and Cultural Studies and Law.
The Centre aims to offer an active forum for free debate and informed analysis of events and issues that concern the Middle East. Recent appointment of staff at Macquarie University is providing the basis for the development of an interdisciplinary research agenda addressing contemporary and historic issues in Middle Eastern Studies.
1. Strengthening the scope of interdisciplinary Middle East Studies at Macquarie University.
2. Developing closer connections with Middle Eastern universities, by fostering student and staff exchanges and joint research projects.
3. Furthering close ties with Australian-Middle East communities at local and national levels.
