On November 18 social entrepreneur Jimmy Pham AM will visit the Macquarie University campus to address students on social entrepreneurship. The talk, The power of one: having the vision, paving the path will focus on how his social venture in Vietnam brought purpose to the lives of thousands.

This twilight event is free, but places are limited - register here.

Jimmy is the founder of Vietnam’s KOTO (Know One, Teach One), a successful restaurant and internationally recognised hospitality training program for disadvantaged youth in Vietnam. During his address, he will share how empowerment, innovation and resourcefulness have fuelled his approach to social entrepreneurship, impacting the success of his training program.

The event will coincide with the launch of Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM) and Macquarie University’s first co-delivered degree, the Master of Social Entrepreneurship. The course has been designed for individuals who are passionate about social justice, creating social impact and assuring environmental sustainability while making profit. Studying this program will empower and equip individuals to lead social change in innovative ways.

Macquarie University Provost, Professor Judyth Sachs, who initiated the degree said: “The role of social entrepreneurs in contemporary society is to think about complex problems in different ways and through this identify social issues and improve social conditions. This degree enables students to think differently, follow their hearts, follow their passion and to make the world a better place.”

MGSM’s Debbie Haski-Leventhal, the Master of Social Entrepreneurship program director, said: “Social entrepreneurship requires a good mixture of business knowledge and social passion. When it comes to financial knowledge, many business schools in Australia offer this education and then require the students to adapt it to the social entrepreneurship world. This degree will give them both business and social know-how.”

Understanding the importance of financial expertise, Jimmy has elected to undertake a two-day executive education course at MGSM while visiting. The practical program, Finance for Non-Finance Managers, is designed to equip business managers with the capacity to make decisions that yield better financial results.

Jimmy’s talk will be hosted by Macquarie University’s PACE as part of their T-talks in the PACE Public Lecture Series. The T-talks events invite today’s community visionaries to share how their practical experience with students has fuelled the creation of highly valued graduates who have both deep knowledge and broad experience. This balance of skills is proving vital in shaping the leaders of the future.
