Succession in the gulf. Anthony Billingsley, a PhD candidate at Macquarie and a former presented this paper in San Francisco in November 2004 to a conference of the Middle East Studies Association of North America, the world's largest association of this kind. The paper is titled Political succession in The Gulf: a system under strain. Anthony Billingsley, spent 18 years in the Department of Foreign Affairs and has worked for the Office of National Assessments.Anthony Billingsley’s conference paper can be viewed here . What makes Africans Arab? The centre recently organised a talk by post-doctoral researcher, Iain Walker on the dynamics of Islamic African identity.
In 1998 East Africa was the scene of two terrorist attacks. Several of those responsible were Muslims from East Africa rather than from Arabia, yet they were operating under the aegis of Al-Qaida, an Arab-dominated fundamentalist organisation. This raises important questions about Muslim African identity. What prompts East Africa Muslims to identify themselves with Arabs, given that they themselves would appear not to be Arab? - The Legacy of the Suez by Pierre Hutton, a former Australian Diplomat in the Middle East.
This is the first written publication of the Macquarie University Middle East Centre, and it is fitting that it is an account of Australia's relations with the Middle East in the years of optimism and building that followed the Suez debacle. At different times Pierre Hutton Served as Ambassador in most of Australia's Middle Eastern Embassies. He was one of those diplomats who worked assiduously behind the scenes to improve our image in the aftermath of the Suez, and it is thanks to him and others like him that Australian trade prospects with the Middle East have so much potential today.
Pierre Hutton's account affords us a personal glimpse behind the scenes of Australian-Middle East relations in the vital years of the 70s and 80s. It also provides an insight into the thinking in the thinking behind Australian foreign policy and into the volatile politics of the Middle East.
