Diversity Week

What is Diversity Week?

Professor Gail Whiteford - Pro Vice-Chancellor (Social Inclusion)

Macquarie University's Diversity Week will be held on campus from 1 - 5 August 2011.

The principles of Diversity Week are:

  1. Enacting respect for diverse ways of being, doing and knowing
  2. Facilitating exploration and meaningful interaction of difference and diversity
  3. Acknowledging the special status of indigenous Australians distinct from other populations
  4. Valuing the diverse communities Macquarie University interact with, especially our local community
  5. Providing a range of activities and events accessible to, and reflective of, all Macquarie University community members
  6. Stimulating participatory engagement through provision of diverse range of cultural, social, educational and fun activities
  7. Foster interfaith dialogue and social interactions based on common human values

Diversity week is not to just celebrate diversity, but to acknowledge and explore differences while encouraging people to open up to new experiences and challenges.

It will offer people the chance to challenge themselves, to meet and talk to someone new, and to embrace an idea that was different from anything they have experienced in their life so far.

Give it a go, make Macquarie a reflection of the world you want to live in. I encourage everyone to not be onlookers, but to get involved, go outside your comfort zone and seek to understand or at least appreciate what is to you unfamiliar. I look forward to seeing you all there.
