Department of Statistics

We deliver advanced training of work-ready applied statisticians and produce world-class research in statistical methodology and theory.

The Department of Statistics is one of the largest in Australia, with large cross-disciplinary teaching responsibilities complementing its research activities. We offer a full range of statistical units, ranging from introductory level, suitable for all students, through to units at a postgraduate level for those who wish to become professional applied statisticians. We actively apply our research in a variety of fields, including medicine, biology, insurance, social science, sport and finance.

At the undergraduate level we offer majors in Statistics and Decision Science, as well as service teaching units in other programs. At the postgraduate level, we deliver the coursework Masters degrees: Master of Applied Statistics and Master of Biostatistics, and the research degrees Bachelor of Philosophy/Master of Research (BPhil/MRes),  Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

The Department of Statistics’ research strengths lie in the areas of biostatistics, applied statistics, stochastic finance, time series analysis, bioinformatics, and image processing. In the 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation, the discipline was ranked 4 out of 5 – performance as at above world standard. We are active in theoretical and applied research, and supervise doctoral students from Australia and abroad. Our researchers publish in internationally respected journals, and regularly present their work at international conferences.
