Department of Statistics

The Department of Statistics is one of Australia’s largest statistics departments and offers a full range of statistical units, ranging from introductory statistics suitable for all Macquarie University students, through to units at Masters level, for those who wish to become professional applied statisticians.

We offer majors  in Statistics and Decision Science which can be taken in Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees.

Our undergraduate and postgraduate programs in statistics can be applied to many fields, including medicine, the social sciences, biology and finance. Our department is active in both theoretical and applied research, and we supervise a large number of PhD students from Australia and abroad.

The 10 best jobs of 2015!

A recent report by CareerCast.com, a career guidance website, has recently released the top 10 jobs of 2015 – and they will all make you wish you paid more attention in STAT170.

The report evaluated several variables including income, outlook, environmental factors, stress, and physical demands for 200 professions across a wide variety of industries, salary ranges, and skill levels. This year, Mathematician, Statistician and Biomedical Engineer all took top spots, with Data Scientists taking the top mid-level income at $124,149!

One thing is for sure: a numerate degree will always stand you in good stead!

Sessional employment

The statistics Department employs on a casual basis:

  • Practical demonstrators for STAT150 and STAT170, who must have completed at least three 200-level units;
  • Tutors in units such as STAT150, STAT170, STAT171, STAT271, STAT272, STAT279, who must have qualified for a degree.
