Macquarie University is upgrading from Research Professional (RP) to Pivot-Research Professional (Pivot-RP) to better serve the needs of its researchers.

Pivot-RP is a searchable database of research funding opportunities and collaborators across all disciplines and project types. It is a trusted and comprehensive source of global funding information across a range of funding bodies, from public funding institutions to not-for-profit opportunities.

The ‘Intelligent Advisor’ is an exciting new feature that examines several areas of a researcher’s profile and displays funding opportunities based on that analysis. Users can choose to receive a weekly email with new funding opportunities that match their profile.

In addition, Pivot-RP offers extra resources and tools to help build and diversify research funding. Pivot-RP can help:

track, save and share information about funding opportunities

discover collaborators

gain insights from previously awarded grants

inform your funding strategies with an authoritative global funding news and analysis service.

Researchers from across Macquarie University, in partnership with industry collaborators, have been successful in securing close to $10 million in ARC funding.

Seventeen Macquarie University research projects have been successful in securing $7.4 million in funding in the 2022 Discovery Projects scheme announced by the Australian Research Council (ARC), while research groups from the Faculty of Science and Engineering, in partnership with industry collaborators, have been awarded over $2.5 million in the latest round of the ARC’s 2022 Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) and 2021 Linkage Projects (round 1) schemes.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Sakkie Pretorius says the breadth and depth of high-quality projects awarded funding across these schemes strongly reflects Macquarie’s longstanding commitment to research excellence and innovation.

“Discovery funding supports our researchers to drive and deliver our strategic vision to generate new understandings, build deeper knowledge and deliver world-leading research. LIEF and Linkage funding provides opportunities to further strengthen Macquarie’s collaborative relationships with industry partners to help respond to, and solve, some of the world’s great challenges.”

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Sakkie Pretorius, said “Each of these awards reflect our University’s strong and thriving commitment to research that has real-world impact and applications. Through consilience, our pioneering researchers, individually, collaboratively, or partnered with industry and the wider community, can unlock new knowledge and explore previously out-of-reach possibilities,” he says.

“I congratulate all our recipients across the University on their success in securing these grants, it is an absolute testament to your diligence and dedication to your disciplines and I look forward to seeing the positive and world-changing impact of the research these awards enable.”

Congratulations to our 2022 Discovery Project grant recipients

No fewer than 22 Macquarie research projects have received funding in the latest ARC Major Grants round, amounting to $8,447,451 in total.

The Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon. Simon Birmingham, made the announcement last week for funding commencing in 2018.

Separated by category, Macquarie was successful in receiving funding for Discovery Projects (DP $5,709,901), Discovery Early Career Research Award (DECRA $2,092,061), and Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF $645,489).

The grants will go towards research projects covering a variety of disciplines. Some of the successful projects include nanosensors in artificial cochlea for natural hearing, solution-processed electronics, statistical learning in the adapting auditory brain, understanding antibiotic synergy on a molecular level, and trust, politics, and fear in muslims and non-muslims amongst ‘Generation 9/11’.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Sakkie Pretorius, said the ARC grants were a credit to the University and its researchers, and reflective of our expertise across a range of discipline areas.

“I am pleased to see a cross-section of Macquarie’s research interests has been successful in securing funding, including those in the areas relating to hearing, language and learning development,” said Professor Pretorius.

“This is a reflection of the University’s growing expertise in these areas, particularly in recent years, which has seen the introduction of the Australian Hearing Hub on campus, along with its partnering researchers, labs and clinics.”

Minister Birmingham said: “The Turnbull Government continues to invest in a wide variety of fundamental and applied research projects that are focused on making a difference to Australia and real social and economic benefits.

“This round of grants will increase Australia’s research capacity by expanding our research infrastructure and facilities and support Australia’s most outstanding researchers, including our early-career and Indigenous researchers, so they can continue to undertake ground-breaking research into the future.”

A list of the successful projects is below:

There is now a new way of applying for internal or external grant funding at Macquarie University.

As part of the implementation of Macquarie University’s new Research Hub, the Pure Research Management System is now available for researchers to apply for internal or external grants (excluding partnerships).

This replaces a previously manual application process and allows our researchers the opportunity to see where their application is in the approval process. This new process will replace the previous approvals process that used the APLI workflow via the IRIS database.

In addition, a new awards process will also be launched in early-October, where researchers will also be able to track the outcomes of their applications. If they have been awarded either internal or external funding, the post-award information and various approvals will be collected and managed through the new system.

How does the Research Office support researchers in managing their applications and awards?

Macquarie’s Pre-Award Team in the Research Office assists our researchers to identify opportunities for research funding and helps to facilitate the development of high-quality, competitive applications. Acting as the principal point of contact between grant applicants and funding agencies, they offer guidance on writing and submitting grant applications and help identify, attract and pursue funding opportunities both nationally and internationally. They also manage all research funding submissions on behalf of Macquarie University researchers, including the University’s internal research funding schemes.

The Post-Award and Reporting Team in the Research Office assists our researchers in managing their funded research projects from the announcement of the funding to the completion of the project. This includes liaising with Finance representatives to open an account, advising academics on funding conditions, managing project variations and supporting reporting of academic milestones to external funding agencies. The team’s support of research project management seeks to minimise the administrative burden on researchers and any potential financial or reputational risks.

Details of current research funding opportunities can be found on the Research funding and grant opportunities page.
