The University is supporting one nomination for each category:

• The problem solver (recognising research impact)
• The future builder (recognising educational impact)
• The community champion (recognising links with the community)

If you would like to self-nominate, or you know if an individual or team who should be nominated in one of these categories, complete this short EOI form before Monday 30 October.

Those progressing to the next stage will be contacted and supported to develop a full application. Shortlisted staff will need to be available for filming of application videos in November.

This year a new category has been introduced:  Excellence in Research Integrity. This coincides with the 10-year anniversary of DORA – The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment. DORA is both a statement of principles and an organisation that campaigns for and supports responsible research assessment internationally.   

To align with DORA principles, Macquarie strives to support assessment that will “incentivise, reflect and reward the plural characteristics of high-quality research, in support of diverse and inclusive research cultures”. The creation of this new award category is just one of many practical actions Macquarie is taking to commit to DORA principles and reinforce the four objectives of the Macquarie University Research Strategy 2025: World-leading research; World-changing impact. 

Recognising outstanding contributions in leadership or innovation in research integrity, this award is open to Macquarie researchers or teams that have fostered integrity in research and promoted a culture of responsible research practice and high-quality (trustworthy) research, including leadership in research data management or open research. 

The award aims to encourage and reward academic excellence in research conduct and quality, by instilling the importance of integrity in research and its outcomes and demonstrating the critical responsibility of every researcher at Macquarie University.  

“Research integrity is, of course, an essential element of all research at Macquarie University,” says Professor Sakkie Pretorius Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research).

“This new award will recognise an outstanding level of sustained contribution to excellence in research integrity by rewarding the best practice of an individual researcher or research group that continuously and proactively maximises research integrity as an integral part of their work.”  

Applicants must demonstrate exceptional standards of transparency and progressive practice in the management of research by addressing the following four judging criteria:  

1. Leadership  
2. Standards and rigour  
3. Implementation and innovation  
4. Support and promotion

There are five categories for the awards, which celebrate those who make our city special and Macquarie Business School is offering all winners a range of prizes that will enhance their leadership skills and build on their reputation as leaders.

The 2022 Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Awards for Professional Staff are now open for nominations, giving you a chance to acknowledge those colleagues (individuals or teams) who do great things in the areas of:

• Outstanding service

• Diversity and inclusion
• Leadership excellence
• Agility award (for pandemic response)

This year Macquarie has added a once-off Agility Award for Pandemic Response to recognise the exceptional and innovative/unique efforts of an individual and/or a team to overcome the challenges our communities, stakeholders, staff and/or students have faced since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Award recipients (individual staff member or a team) for each category are awarded a $4000 grant to be spent on professional development for the individual or team (eg. course, conference, accreditation).

“Professional staff are an integral part of the University’s ongoing success. It is important that exceptional performance is appropriately recognised and rewarded,” says Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton.

“These last two years with Covid-19 have been extraordinarily tough and this is a great opportunity to recognise those staff who have gone above and beyond their normal course of duty.”

In 2019, Penny Huisman, now Head of Student Wellbeing, won an award for Collaboration and Connection for her role leading the Respect.Now.Always project.

“I used my grant to attend training, looking at good practice in relation to responding to bullying, harassment, sexual harassment and sexual assault,” says Penny.

In 2017 Adam Joyce, a professional staff member in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, won a Collaboration and Connection award for his critical role in the Dark Sky Project, aimed at preserving the night sky by reducing the light pollution created by modern infrastructure.

“I used my grant to attend two conferences on light pollution: Riding the Lightwave of Technology, which was held at Coonabarabran’s Siding Spring Observatory and was the first of its kind in Australia, and the ALAN (Artificial Light at Night Conference) 2018 conference in Snowbird, Utah,” says Adam.

“My being able to interact with the community and create new connections will hopefully build strong relationships in the future for Macquarie and help work towards understanding and solving the problem of light pollution.”
