    1. What?! You expect the university to actually listen to its staff, students and business owners? Sorry, but that’s not the way it works under this new leadership…

      I am so glad Grapeshot stood up and exposed this issue so that we can all know the truth as to what is happening with this move. I for one will not be shopping there…

  1. Can we really believe the interim results of the Your Say survey? From everyone I spoke with, staff morale across campus has plummeted and faith in the executive is also very low. No one has been happy with the change processes which have recently occurred (Marketing, IT, Printery etc) yet there is a 17% increase in satisfaction with this – fishy? Is it safe to assume that all the negative data has been scrubbed and ignored, and only the positives will be trumpeted? What quality assurance guarantees are given for this data and its reporting i.e. lack of interference from self serving executives down in the E11A ivory tower?

  4. Pokemon Go is really the only thing keeping my stress levels down working here, plus it means I get out for a walk at lunch rather than working through it…

  5. I would play it by my phone is too old to run the app properly. A shame, since it seems there are plenty of Pokemon around the University!

  6. Cost of living in Sydney is ridiculous. Full-time at Macquarie should be more than 35 hours per week. 38 hours is the maximum in NSW, so why aren’t we working 38 hours? 8 hours per day Monday to Wednesday, and 7 hours per day Thursday and Friday (or 8 hours on Thursday and a 6 hour Friday). That would be the same as an 8.57% pay rise, and more productivity for the university using the same office space. Can the next poll be about a 38 hour working week?

    1. As our salaries are based on an annual figure rather than an hourly calculation, working more hours would just mean our hourly rates go down. More so for staff that claim overtime/time in lieu beyond their 35 hour week- these benefits will be stricken.
      If you want to work more hours then the corporate sector probably has an opening for you.

    2. I think they mean an increase in hours AND pay. Our area is properly staffed so I never get overtime. I’d happily trade overtime I never get for a higher yearly salary.

  8. If I had to choose between Google and Microsoft then Google would win hands down. Having said that, I’d feel a lot more positive towards Office 365 if I could actually use the desktop version of Outlook rather than wasting hours each week trying to locate emails that the search feature of the online version simply cannot find or looking for ‘workarounds’ for things I used to be able to do easily in Gmail. Unfortunately that’s not an option we have in the Library. We are a whole building of professional and para-professional staff who manage access to information for a living (via catalogues, databases and any number of search products, platforms and tools, including teaching others how to do so effectively) and yet we can’t even have a full email client as a basic business tool.

  9. I have only been employed with the university for 2 months, and my manager has been more than accommodating regarding flexible working hours.
    My only comment is that I would prefer to be contracted to work an 8 hour day rather than 7. I would prefer an extra hour’s pay per day due to the high cost of living in Sydney.

    1. I would like to work an 8 hour day but have a 9-day fortnight. That would be my idea of a perfect working arrangement!

  10. I’d like to echo all the remarks made about the switch to Office 365, which was a terrible decision. All the Google products were working fine and there was no need for this switch. The fact that we weren’t even consulted before they went ahead with this waste of our money and time is typical of the managerial and unaccountable strain running through the university.

    We need to spend money on things like more academic staff to teach to smaller class sizes or more scholarships for disadvantaged students. I don’t need my time and money wasted on useless software changes that I can do out of my own volition if need be.

    1. I am a big fan of Google Drive. It’s frustrating that new staff don’t get access to it, as I have trouble sharing files with them.
      Do you think that it will affect Marketing’s credibility if they are required to put a positive spin on a shift to Office 365? Because Marketing have nothing to do with the decision to change.

Despite the 92% favour to Google Drive and apps, just wait for the justification and push of Office 365 from the new marketing regime regardless of user feedback (much like any major decision at this university in the last few years). It has been a very frustrating experience as a Mac user. The Google Apps just worked on Mac, Windows and mobile devices. OneDrive (the equivalent to Google Drive) does not work properly on Mac and still waiting on an official app for local syncing. As for video conferencing, Google Hangouts wins hands down for being easy to use and scale for large meetings compared to Skype for Business.

    If only ‘they’ had listened to us before the switch (not that true consultation is really a strong point on this campus anymore…)

    1. The push to Office 365 wasn’t a choice by Marketing – it was the Executive who ordered this change.

      To clarify, I understand the executive made this decision, however it will be down to marketing to try to convince the 92% of us that we are wrong and the Office365 is superior…

  12. Why not poll Office 365 Mail vs Gmail. (I know the hands down winner to that!!)

    1. These polls are purely designed to ‘check the pulse’ on issues we know staff are talking about around campus. There’s no agenda behind them, and we can’t promise any action as a result, but we’re sure IT would be very interested in everyone’s feedback so far.

    2. It’s so if the poll results are favourable, they can pat themselves on the back. If unfavourable, they can just pretend the problem doesn’t exist, yet pretend there was user engagement regardless….

    3. Why would they suddenly be interested in our feedback now? A faculty member actually put up a web poll before the switch (because of COURSE admin wasn’t going to ask our opinion when it might still have an impact), and found overwhelming opinion against the move to Office 365. That poll was sent to admin, and it made zero difference. They knew almost none of us wanted this change, and they did it anyway because they don’t care.

    4. I’m guessing that the university executive wants to get rid of our Google accounts and shift us wholly over to Office 365. At the moment the university is paying for both two sets of services, which are theoretically, if not practically the same. (I also believe that Microsoft costs more than Google, but I could be wrong.) Personally, I think when we are facing cost cuts all over, the decision to migrate our email to another service whilst simultaneously maintaining the previous service (sans email) was ridiculous. The rhetoric that it was in the interests of data security was just insulting. We can’t keep our email with Google because of data security but we’re free to maintain documents and spreadsheets on Google Drive? The university doesn’t prevent us from using other US-based services cloud services such as Dropbox.

      Sadly, I can’t see us ever returning to Gmail despite the very convincing arguments for productivity and overwhelming support from staff. The remainder of the Google suite will disappear too and you can guarantee that our documents will not be migrated and because of the permissions on our accounts, we can’t easily transfer them to the Google Drive of another account, so that’ll be more time wasted manually exporting and importing files.

      Perhaps in future, when faced with decisions such as these, the university could save us from lost time and productivity and simply burn a pile of cash instead.

  13. I agree with Michael’s comment (below), after loosing all invitation, various emails and most day wasting time trying to use 365- which is nothing but frustration.

  14. That’s a pretty overwhelming preference. However, the switch to Office 365 was made entirely without regard to the preferences of the academic community at MQ, so I don’t expect this to be any different.

  16. The search function in Office 365 and Outlook 2016 is alarmingly inadequate for our purposes. Efficiency has deteriorated substantially since the introduction of Office 365. The “Not Responding” message appears at least 10 times a day, not to mention freezing of the screen when we have both Office 365 and Outlook 2016 open simultaneously. We have attended relevant Office 365 and Outlook 2016 training sessions internal and external to MQ, however, and it is obvious to us that Google is more appropriate for our operational needs.

  17. Office 365 is manifestly inferior to Google Drive for serious collaboration. It is less stable, it has paragraph-level locking in Word documents, and does not allow track changes in online mode, requiring documents to open in Word (which not only requires me to reboot from Linux to Windows, but also has a tendency lose connectivity, requiring saving a local copy and manually reconciling changes). If MQ discontinues Google Drive, I will not use Office 365, but instead rely on our grant-funding instance of Google Apps for Business (as I do for Gmail and Google Calendar since MQ discontinued them). Google Drive *just works* for collaboration on multi-authored documents. Office 365 does not.

  18. Can we PLEASE have ONE system. If we are using Office365 for email and documents why would you use google drive ? If we use google drive then why would we not use gmail and google docs ?

    1. We should use whatever tools suit our needs whether they come in the same package or not. Office365 email on Outlook is a complete failure and has massively compromised productivity as well as causing huge frustration to users. The search function is next to useless, groups are unwieldy, and the calendar lacks functionality. Look at the numbers in this poll – clearly Google is much preferred. I bet that if a poll about returning to gmail was run it would be 99% for gmail and 1% for Office365. I only know of one person who prefers Outlook to gmail. And I talk to a LOT of people.

    2. We had to change because the executive use outlook. So all staff had to switch basically so that everyone would integrate correctly. Since the there is little interest in the rest of the suite, it’s the reason the rest has remained as is.
