Sustainability and Warriors@Work celebrated World Wetlands Day last Monday 2 February, with Tai Chi, lunch and a tour of our wetlands with John Macris, Macquarie University’s Biodiversity Planner.

World Wetlands Day marks the anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramsar, Iran in 1971. In 2012 Macquarie developed a wetland on the upper reaches of Mars Creek.

Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton has been appointed a Trustee of the Arts Gallery of New South Wales for a three-year term commencing 1 January 2015.

Deputy Premier and Minister for the Arts, Troy Grant said Professor Dowton would bring “fresh insight” and “global perspective” to the role of supporting and advising the Art Gallery of NSW’s management team.

“Professor Dowton’s academic and leadership experience is first class, he was born in Ivanhoe, he grew up in Dubbo, taught at Harvard and is now leading Macquarie University as the Vice-Chancellor,” Mr Grant said.

“The Gallery will continue to offer people from all walks of life the opportunity to experience art, attracting over 1.1 million visitors each year with internationally acclaimed exhibitions and popular, engaging public programs,” he added.

Nine volunteers from the Department of Physics and Astronomy helped mark the beginning of the 2015 UNESCO International Year of Light, at the Sydney New Year’s Eve Lord Mayor’s Picnic.

More than 1000 children with specific needs experienced the science, magic and wonder of light,  making their own light colours and testing their colour vision, finding out about rainbows, and much more.

A delegation travelled to India in January to strengthen ties and announce $1 million in scholarships for Indian students. Several memorandums of understanding were signed, and Big History was launched in the country.

Professor Jim Lee also led a delegation to Bangladesh in January, where he met with government representatives, institutions, key partners, alumni and the Australian High Commission, to confirm Macquarie’s commitment to Bangladesh and its position as a priority country for the University.

In December 2014, Macquarie  hosted a three-day international symposium on the discovery of ancient Chinese texts and their impact on the study of early Chinese philosophy and history. Organised by the Chinese Studies team in the Department of International Studies, the event was well attended by scholars, students and members of the local community, including The Hon Dr Helen Sham Ho, OAM, Macquarie University Patron and alumna. As a result of the event, one of the attendees, Mr Hao Guang Li, has pledged an annual prize for Chinese Studies.
