Tapped to win

Sustainability campaign Tap It has won the Student Engagement Award at the Green Gown Awards Australasia.

“Winning the award against tough competition was indeed an honour,” said Director of Sustainability Leanne Denby. “It highlights the dedication and commitment of the staff and students involved in the campaign.”

The campaign encourages staff and students to refill reusable water bottles, rather than purchasing single-use bottled water.

“This has been the most successful campaign we’ve developed,” said Leanne. “More than 700 staff and students have pledged to use tap water and refillable bottles wherever available.”

Leanne explains that through pledges, the University has the potential to spare up to nine tonnes of plastic from landfill.

“An army of student volunteers helped us develop a campus wide Tap Map, distribute 2000 re-usable water bottles and host a Bottled Water Free Day to dispel tap water myths. 62 per cent of participants on the day preferred tap over bottled water in blind taste tests, and many couldn’t tell the difference,” she said.
