Introducing the Macquarie University International College

On July 9, Macquarie announced that from 2016 we would be establishing our own pathways college, replacing a long-standing relationship with the Sydney Institute of Business and Technology (SIBT), operated by Navitas.

Many staff have since been involved in planning every aspect of the College’s structure and operations.

“There’s been a wonderful level of energy and enthusiasm from staff across the University community,” said Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Professor Jim Lee. “The opportunity to design the ideal college from the ground up does not occur every day.”

Initially, the College will cater to international students who are unable to automatically gain entry into a Macquarie degree. The curriculum for the international programs has already been established. There are three Foundation programs, each offering three streams (Commerce, Arts, Science) and a Diploma for Accounting, Commerce and Business Administration. Three other diploma programs are currently in development.

“Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) Sherman Young and his academic colleagues at ASQC and Academic Senate were extremely helpful in quickly developing and approving the teaching programs needed for the College,” Professor Lee said.

The College will be located in the on-campus premises currently used by SIBT above Macquarie International. Furthermore, it will be co-located with the English Language Centre to ensure seamless support for international students who have good understanding of structural English grammar but require support to improve their English language and study skills prior to commencing their pathway program.

MUIC students will have access to the full suite of student services, support and facilities enjoyed by other Macquarie University students, from Library and Campus Wellbeing to the learning systems of the Learning and Teaching Centre.

“The great advantage of owning our own student pathways college, “ said Professor Lee, “is that it can be specifically designed to ensure that the students optimise their academic learning, maximise their opportunities for success, and seamlessly transition to the broader University.”
