Challenge accepted

The sixth annual Department Sustainability Challenge (DSC) saw more than 40 departments across campus pit their sustainability skills against each other. Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton celebrated their achievements at a recent awards ceremony.

“This year’s Challenge was about considering the ways in which we support both the physical environment of this campus, and the campus community as a whole,” he said. “Everyone involved has the right to be very proud. We’ve done a lot of good work over the years to interweave sustainability into the fabric of the University.”

For Marketing and Management Head of Department Professor Lucy Taksa and her team, the challenge was an opportunity to gain a better understanding of sustainability in the broader sense of the word.

“When people hear sustainability, their first reaction is ‘that’s about resources and environment’,” said Lucy. “This is largely true, but there is a social dimension as well, which we were happy to acknowledge and rediscover through the One Act initiative, as well as through department events highlighting diversity and the sharing of common values.”
