London calling

London-based graduates and their guests attended a recent alumni reception that celebrated our Jubilee year and showcased our recent  launch of our Shared Identity.

Among the speakers was 1992 Bachelor of Economics and 1993 Master of Economics (Honours) graduate Andrew Formica, now Chief Executive Officer of the London-based £79 billion asset management company Henderson Global Investors. Andrew recalled a strong focus on academic rigour and independent thought at Macquarie, but also a strong ethos of camaraderie built through university life.

“My time at Macquarie was an exceptionally positive experience. I met my wife there and I also met many of my good friends, some of whom are here today.

“Overall, I believe the core values that drive the success that I have seen in my career have come about through the experience I had at Macquarie. All of us have a strong responsibility as alumni to make sure we don’t just focus on our own careers, but also on those coming along behind us,” said Andrew.

Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton hosted the event and encouraged guests to stay connected and engaged with the University as we build on our first 50 years.

“To be on the other side of the world and surrounded by such a large group of alumni and friends of Macquarie is testament to the truly global reach of the institution,” he said.

Guests included Master of Ceremonies Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Corporate Engagement & Advancement), Professor David Wilkinson; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Professor Jim Lee; Dean of Macquarie Graduate School of Management, Professor Alex Frino; and Director of Alumni Relations, Bruce Mortimer.

The event resulted in 10 new alumni volunteers agreeing to coordinate future ‘by alumni, for alumni’ events in the Capital, and the Alumni Relations team will continue to engage our 150,000 strong alumni community with similar events later this year in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai.
