Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton with Xin Yang
Xin Yang grew up in Liancheng County in southern China, where he faced significant challenges due to limited financial resources in his family for higher education. With three children, his parents were only able to support one child’s education beyond high school, making it hard for Xin to achieve his aspiration for a higher degree education.
Xin’s remarkable journey began with his notable achievement in the FIRST® Robotics competition, showcasing his passion for learning and determination to overcome obstacles.
Recognising Xin’s potential, a generous donor stepped forward, providing a scholarship to fully fund Xin’s education at Macquarie University. The Bridging the Gap Scholarship, created specifically for talented individuals like Xin, aims to offer international educational opportunities to those who wouldn’t typically have access.
“Thanks to Macquarie University and FIRST Robotics, we had the opportunity to gather in Changle [in China]. This competition gave me confidence and hope. I now have bigger goals for my life,” says Xin.

Through this scholarship, Xin has been able to pursue his dream of studying overseas as his tuition fees and living expenses are covered, including periodic return travel to his hometown. The scholarship also provides additional benefits such as internships and summer programs, enhancing Xin’s educational journey and broadening his horizons.
As Xin continues to excel academically and expand his future prospects, his story serves as an inspiration to others. It exemplifies the profound impact of philanthropy, enabling individuals to overcome barriers, achieve their goals and change their lives.
