Vale Peter Bergquist (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, 1994-2002)

peterIt is with sadness that we acknowledge the recent passing of Peter Bergquist in New Zealand at age 86.

Peter was was Emeritus Professor in the Department of Molecular Sciences and served as the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) from 1994 to 2002.

A world leader in the field of Molecular Genetics, Peter was the founder Director of the Macquarie University Biotechnology Research Institute (MUBRI) and was awarded the Insignia of an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to science in 2012.

Professor Anwar Sunna, who worked alongside Peter in the Department of Molecular Sciences for 23 years, says it was a privilege to know and work with him.

“Peter was a mentor, friend and collaborator who was always supportive and generous with his time. He had a great and positive impact on the lives and careers of many of us at Macquarie and he was admired by his students and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.”

  1. Very sorry to hear this sad news. I remember Peter well – I was in the Centre for Higher Education and Professional Development (CHEPD) from 1993-97 and we worked quite closely with the Research portfolio in those days.
