The path to advanced cancer research was the key topic of discussion at a recent morning tea hosted by the Philanthropy Team.
The event highlighted our collaborative commitment to strengthening the ongoing fight against cancer through research-focused endeavours and raised more than $1000 towards cancer research at the University.
During the morning tea, staff gathered alongside experts and enthusiastic supporters to engage in a dialogue led by Professor Helen Rizos and Dr John Park. Professor Rizos leads the Precision Cancer Therapy research team in the Macquarie School of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences. Dr Park is a medical oncologist and a Senior Clinical Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences. Both are principal investigators of the Macquarie University Cancer Biobank.

During a compelling dialogue, the two experts highlighted the vital role of a biospecimen bank – a repository of tissue and fluid samples, preserved for current and future research initiatives. The University’s Cancer Biobank is an invaluable collection that not only houses biological materials but also encompasses crucial clinical information and pathology reports. By fostering investigations into the origins, progression, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and tumours, the Biobank stands as a pivotal resource for researchers conducting ethically approved cancer studies.
The event finished with Hedda Paisley, Executive Director of Philanthropy, offering closing remarks and explaining that donations made to Macquarie University causes are directed entirely towards research, without any administrative fees deducted.
During the morning tea, colleagues shared dishes they had prepared, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. The event not only showcased our collective passion for cancer research, but also emphasised the importance of collaboration in laying a solid foundation for future research.
