At this year’s much-anticipated DVCR Weather Forecast, Professor Sakkie Pretorius, looked to the future and outlined the platform for research at Macquarie University.

At a time of significant change, both locally and globally, our Macquarie research teams can meet the global challenges with our world-leading research and world-changing impact.

“We will always value, celebrate and support excellence wherever it occurs,” said Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Sakkie Pretorius at the event last Thursday 26 May.

Professor Pretorius considered the research landscape beyond Research Strategy 2025 to future-proof the scale and focus of research excellence at Macquarie.

So, how to prepare for that future?

Professor Pretorius explained our multidisciplinary research must be underpinned by disciplinary strength and specialised expertise. In addition to applying the FOCI Lens (Focus, Opportunity, Consilience, Impact), the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) define the key global challenges and provide an opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way.future-research-slide_large-3
Macquarie University will collaborate and build consilience wherever possible, form diverse networks, and focus on strategic areas that can deliver distinction.

“We have to make sure we position our university where we are empowered to make our own strategic choices and investments. So let’s not only think about the future, let’s build it,” he said.

Reflecting with pride on our researchers’ achievements, Professor Pretorius applauded Macquarie’s trajectory. Publications have increased by 45%, and more importantly, the quality of those publications with 97% now rated at world standard and above. Our external research income has doubled, and Category 3 industry income has grown by 36%. HDR completions have increased by 78% and we remain in the top 200 Universities globally.

“We must take the bigger challenges that face the world and incorporate them into our goals. Our approach will be a winning one if we assemble our expertise around these SDGs, work together and live up to our mantra – YOU to the power of US,” concluded Professor Pretorius.
