There’s been a high level of staff interest in giving feedback on our Operating Plan 2020-2024 since the launch of our digital engagement platform earlier this month.
So far, we’ve had more than 800 staff join the platform, 2750+ page views and – most importantly – 36 ideas on how we can achieve the goals set out in the University’s five key areas of focus, plus 52 comments and 410 votes on these ideas.
If you haven’t yet had your say on our Operating Plan 2020-2024, join the platform now to give your feedback and help shape the future of our University. You can also sign up for one of the staff engagement workshops the Vice-Chancellor will be hosting in March.
Here are some ideas trending on each of the five key focus areas on the platform:
Students first
Genuinely understanding students’ needs
“I would like to see the University undertake regular focus groups with students across the campus to understand their perceived needs, frustrations, and concerns for the future. At times, I struggle myself to understand how I can best meet students’ needs.
“Students’ needs and concerns are changing and we need to get a handle on this, rather than assuming that ‘we always know best’. It’s about creating an ongoing dialogue.”

Coursework suite and delivery
Recognition of course coordinators
“Recognition of the important leadership role of course coordinators (aka convenors), should be senior academic appointments with recognition of workload and opportunities for promotion.
“Course coordinators would have responsibilities for academic course decisions including offerings, admission, industry liaison committee, course review and student engagement, RPL, credit and academic progression.”

Focused investment in research
Role of philanthropy
“Generating philanthropic support of the key research themes has the potential to transform the impact of our research by funding areas that traditional funding doesn’t.
“I would love for us to develop some bold statements around the future impact that Macquarie could have on society. Setting these bold targets will inspire philanthropists to help us get there.”

Our people
Professional staff – internal job shadowing program
“The opportunity for staff members to shadow other staff from areas that they may be interested in. Such as a program that runs for 6 weeks whereby you would spend half a day every week shadowing someone else from another office or area that you are particularly interested in.
“Benefits: This would give professional staff the opportunity to broaden their area of interest and experience life in an office that they may be aiming to progress into. It will also give staff an understanding of how processes work in other areas. To help us support each other better across the University.
“For example I need to communicate and work with HR a lot, however I don’t know how HR operate on a day-to-day basis, by having the opportunity to learn first-hand what they do ‘behind the scenes’ it would allow me a better understanding, and ultimately improve the way I work and communicate with HR.”

Ways of working
Rationalise and capitalise on our internal comms toolsets
“Office 365 Groups, Teams, Yammer, SharePoint, Outlook, Zoom, Skype, Google Everything, Slack, Confluence etc etc and now Crowdicity – then all the others (insta, facebook etc) that everyone uses because of the lack of coordination in Macquarie sponsored platforms.
“The idea is to do the work to determine a sensible set of tools, build the integrations and practices and then leverage them.”
