Changes just announced mark the next step in the evolution of MQ Health in realising the original strategy for health at Macquarie University.

Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton said MQ Health will become a single structure for the delivery of healthcare from the University through the integration of Macquarie University Hospital (MUH) and Macquarie University Clinical Associates (MUCA).

“These changes are proposed with careful consideration of the growth and considerable momentum already established around the MQ Health brand as well as how other successful academic health science centres around the world are organised and operate, especially in the US and Europe,” Professor Dowton said.

Key changes are:

  • The legal name of the new integrated entity delivering clinical services is now MQ Health Pty Limited. Macquarie University Hospital and the MQ Health Clinics remain as trading names and important brands for our patients.
  • A new single MQ Health Board has been established and will be chaired by the Vice-Chancellor.
  • MUCA and MUH will officially merge to become a single entity in early January 2019.

Professor Patrick McNeil, while remaining in the role of Executive Dean Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, has been confirmed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Medicine and Health – leading all aspects of MQ Health’s operations.

Professor McNeil is a highly experienced clinical academic, practitioner and medical administrator. His career includes senior roles at UNSW, where, as Associate Dean, Education, he led the transformation of UNSW’s medical curriculum. He was also Executive Clinical Director at one of the State’s largest public hospitals, Liverpool Hospital.

Professor McNeil became Macquarie University’s inaugural Executive Dean of Medicine in 2014 and Managing Director of Macquarie University Clinical Associates in 2015. He has been instrumental in introducing the four-year graduate-entry Doctor of Medicine program, the Macquarie MD, which had its first intake in 2018.

In announcing Professor McNeil’s appointment, Professor Dowton said, “Patrick has precisely the right skills and experience to lead realisation of the original strategy for health at Macquarie University – the integration of MUCA and MUH to create MQ Health.

“Patrick is another visionary leader in the University’s executive, whose continued focus will ensure we are fit-for-purpose for the next 50 years, delivering not only what the student of today needs, but what our patients, clinical practitioners, researchers and professional staff need from a highly successful healthcare enterprise.”

Professor McNeil said, “I am delighted to take on this next-level leadership role. I relish the opportunity to lead a new phase of growth for MQ Health, efficiency of our operations, improved outcomes for our patients and the next generation of health and medical professionals.”
