Macquarie Professor awarded Advance HE Academy Principal Fellowship

Pro Vice-Chancellor (Programs and Pathways), Professor Sean Brawley, has achieved Principal Fellowship of Advance HE Academy.

2017-05-30-chris-stacey-43Advance HE, formerly the UK-based Higher Education Academy, provides formal recognition of professional practice in higher education teaching and learning support, through awarding Fellowships to academics, university teachers and higher education professionals who have successfully applied to have their practice assessed against the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF).

There are four categories of Fellowship, Associate Fellowship (AFHEA), Fellowship (FHEA), Senior Fellowship (SFHEA) and Principal Fellowship (PFHEA), which span the experience of those who teach and supervise students, or who support and lead learning in higher education.

Principal Fellowships are typically awarded to those demonstrating a sustained record of effective strategic leadership in academic practice and development, and who are highly experienced with wide-ranging strategic leadership responsibilities in connection with key aspects of teaching and supporting learning. There are more than 950 Principal Fellows globally, and around 50 in Australia.

“The HEA Fellowship system is a great opportunity for any colleague to stop and reflect on their teaching,” says Professor Brawley.

“It does take time and effort but to join this increasing band of international scholars is important recognition of an aspect of our professional practice which we too often do not share with our colleague next door, let alone around our university or the sector more generally.”

Since the MQ HEA Fellowship pilot program began in October 2017, the University has achieved 11 successful HEA Fellowship applicants from each Faculty (including academic and professional staff), as well as from HDR Office, MUIC, PACE, and of course, the PVC Programs and Pathways.

Macquarie also has more than 160 people in the process of applying for HEA Fellowships, so we expect many more in the coming months.

If you are interested in applying for a HEA Fellowship, please email Professional Learning Project Coordinator, Dr Karina Luzia.
