Don’t forget your cyber safety!

The start of a new year is a good time to remind ourselves how to stay secure while using technology at the University or at home.

Cyber security is a growing issue with global events such as ransomware and data breaches featuring frequently in the mainstream media. This trend is likely to continue in 2018 as more data and services migrate to online systems. While the world of cyber security moves quickly, the principles for protecting yourself and the University remain largely the same. Macquarie IT has selected five key principles to practice while using technology at work or at home:

  1. Update software when prompted by your computer or device from a reputable source
  2. Use strong passwords for University and personal accounts
  3. Maintain backups of valuable computer files
  4. Limit data sharing to only those needed
  5. Report incidents of suspicious emails and confidential data exposure

Following these principles is essential for reducing the likelihood of becoming a victim of cyber-crime. If you believe that your account has been compromised or would like to report a security incident please contact the IT Service Desk on 9850 4357 or email help@mq.edu.au.
