All current University parking permits will be valid for use at no additional cost until 31 March. From 1 April you’ll need to have a new 2018 permit if you wish to park on campus.

Monthly, half-yearly and yearly 2018 permits will be available to buy from Monday 5 March from the Cashiers Office (16 Wally’s Walk, Central Courtyard side) or from your Department Head/Executive Assistant.

Salary sacrificing will continue to be available for continuing and fixed-term staff.

  1. I am a member of the sports club gymnasium and object to having to pay for parking. Do you not get enough revenue. I am aware that membership due to the parking impost has dropped by 200?
I am hoping that you will do away with this additional cost to my attempts to stay healthy.

    1. Hi Colin, thanks for your comment about the removal of free parking for gym visitors to Macquarie University’s Sport and Aquatic Centre and sorry to hear you are unhappy about the changes however there is no plan to remove the new system. It is a more equitable approach to parking on campus (students and staff already pay to use the University’s carparks) and $1.50 per hour is a reasonable rate. It is true that some gym members have chosen to leave us however we note that the majority have not. For all information and updates about parking on campus you can head to http://www.mq.edu.au/parking.

    1. Hi Narie, parking rates will be released early next week but for your budgeting purposes the student rate under PAYG will be no more that under the permit system.

To receive all updates about parking from next week please head to the MyMQ Facebook page @macquarieunicampus.

      Best regards,
      Property Team

  2. My classes will begin from 23rd July 2018 (session 2) but you are starting the new parking system in September. So can you suggest me what to do for the month last week of July and August.

    1. Hi MD Raihanul Islam, good question thanks for raising it. Interim permits can be purchased to cover the period from 23 July to when the new parking system for students is activated in early October. Available from the cashier’s office from 1 July for $80. Remember to bring your student ID.

  3. Hi I was wondering if the purchase of a parking permit is required if we have the NSW disability card displayed?

    1. Hi Rose, there is no need to purchase a parking permit if you have an up-to-date Australian Mobility Parking Permit correctly displayed. Kind regards, the Property Team.

  4. What about students starting July 2018? It looks like permits for students (half-year duration) is $200 is only valid until September 2018 according to the website. Is there an alternate permit available for students starting July and lasts until end of Semester 2?.

    1. Hi Melissa, the only other permit available is the monthly one, then in September we’ll be transitioning to a pay-as-you-go system for students.

  5. What are the new pay as you go rates going to be (i.e. caps, hourly rates etc)? They don’t seem to have been published anywhere. When will they be released?

    1. Hi Patrick, they’re currently being reviewed, and will be announced nearer to September.

  6. You’ve said that this pay as you go situation will be cheaper for students, but what about the students that need to be on campus 4-5 days a week for long hours? I’m a PhD candidate, so I’m on campus quite often, and as I live outside of Sydney it means I stay long hours to both beat the traffic and make efficient time of my study.

Can you explain to me how a pay as you go system is going to be cheaper for students like me? because I will be going from paying a lump sum in the beginning of the year and never worrying about it again, to now having nearly a daily charge for parking, which will invariably add up to more than what I originally paid for an annual permit, even if the rates are ‘reasonable.’

    1. Hi Matt, when pay-as-you-go parking is introduced for students later in the year, three factors will ensure costs are fair:

      1) daily caps, meaning you won’t spend more than a certain amount per day.
      2) zoned parking, giving you more choice about what you pay (the cheapest parking will be on the outskirts of the campus).
      3) you’ll only be paying for the parking you use, not for a full 12 months, as was the case with the annual permits that are no longer available for students.

  7. I paid almost $1000 in 2017/2018 for my two annual permits. At the moment, I cannot get a park after 10am. Even far flung spots like the gym are full by 10am. Why are so many people parking this year with no permit/no requirement to pay a daily ticket? Seems inequitable. I know the permit does not guarantee a park, but it seems unreasonable that these cars get a free ride.

Also, will the $1800 special ticket guarantee a park throughout the period of the station closure? Can that be salary sacrificed?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Veronica, the 2018 permits don’t take effect until this Sunday, 1 April, which is why you’re seeing so many cars without permits displayed. From 1 April all vehicles will be required to display a valid permit or daily ticket.

In answer to your other questions, the $1,897 Premium-E Permit is valid to March 2019 and can be salary sacrificed, as per the information on the webpage linked to above.

  8. I was told by cashier staff that once our half yearly permits have expired on 31st Aug, the new pay as you go system will revert to the casual parking rates. That will end up costing me somewhere in the vicinity of $1000… and that’s just for 2-3 days a week!!! Is there going to be a revision of these prices???

    1. Hi Chanelle, there appears to be some confusion between casual parking and pay-as-you-go – they’re two different systems, the latter being more affordable and more convenient.

Incidentally, your figure of $1000 for casual parking is way off – nobody’s paying $333-$500 per day to park on our campus…

  9. I am part time casual academic staff and only require parking when I have a scheduled class
any possibility of a pay as you go system as suggested for students as the full time permit is
    rather expensive

    1. Hi Suzanne, unfortunately there are currently no plans to introduce pay-as-you-go parking for staff during this permit period (April 2018-March 2019).

  10. When will the new grass carpark open.
The current lack of parking whilst that area sits vacant is ridiculous.

    1. Hi, unfortunately the recent heavy rain has delayed the full reopening of the grass carpark. While the grass itself is healthy, the ground underneath needs further time to firm up after being waterlogged and to allow sufficient root growth to withstand the weight of cars. We appreciate your patience as we wait for nature to take its course.

  11. New permit form available from 5 March. how much we will be charged for 26/2 to 02/03 ?

i am a new student and have not applied parking permit before.

  12. I’m starting at Macq Uni w/b 26 Feb. What are my parking options while I wait for permit form to be available on 5 March, noting I can’t afford casual rates

    1. Hi Denise, it’ll be covered in your induction, but no payment is required for staff to park on campus until 31 March.

  13. Hi there – I purchased a monthly permit (expiry 31 January) when I started at the University at the end of last year on the advice that annual permits are normally available in February. Is this covered by the extension or is it only half yearly and yearly permits that are being extended? Thanks!

    1. Hi Gabrielle, yearly permits are no longer available because we’re currently reviewing cheaper parking alternatives for students, where you’ll only pay for the time you’re parked on campus. Later in the year, we’ll be moving away from permits to a new pay-as-you-go parking system that will allow you to pay online or with a smartphone app.
