Last week we saw the Academic Staff Awards held as we celebrated the achievements of many outstanding members of our community.

For the first time, and acknowledging the nexus between teaching and research, both staff and students came together to honour the highly-commended finalists and winners for both the Vice-Chancellor’s Learning and Teaching Awards and the Research Excellence Awards.

Professor Sherman Young, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) expressed his congratulations to the winning group and thanked them for their tireless dedication to teaching.

“I’m proud of the collaboration and innovation demonstrated by our award-winning colleagues across the University,” he said.

“Outstanding teaching and research will continue to enhance our students’ journeys to futures beyond the classroom.”

In a truly inspirational achievement, two of our academics – Dr Kira Westaway and Associate Professor Kerry Sherman – received an award in both the Learning and Teaching and Research categories.

“Both Kira and Kerry demonstrate the nexus between teaching and research and show us that you can excel in both areas,” said Professor Sakkie Pretorius, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research).

“Moving forward with the Academic Staff Awards, I anticipate we will celebrate more academics who are black belts in teaching and research.”

Congratulations to all 2017 winners.
