The International Studies and Ancient History departments co-hosted the Weidenbach Symposium on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 September. The event was a presentation of ongoing national and international research collaboration centred on the recently rediscovered diary of Max Weidenbach, a Prussian draughtsman who accompanied the Royal Prussian expedition to Egypt and Sudan from 1842-1845, and who subsequently migrated to South Australia. The Thursday evening event comprised a series of short illustrated lectures with participation of staff and students from the Department of International Studies and the Department of Ancient History as well as from collaborating institutions; the South Australian Museum Adelaide, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the University of Oxford. A full-day workshop followed on Friday with talks by 12 further speakers showcasing the many facets of research on the Weidenbach diary. The project is currently supported by the Australia-Germany Joint Research Collaboration Scheme funded by Universities Australia and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

dsc_1248Learning experience of a life-time for Arts students

Sixteen students from the Faculty of Arts recently undertook a unique learning experience in India visiting the cities of Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata and exploring areas of cultural significance (including the Taj Mahal, pictured here behind the group). The students undertook a three-week study program with three of Macquarie’s partner institutions, including Lady Shri Ram College.

“The student exchange program between Macquarie University and its Indian counterparts not only enhances their education quotient, but also offers them an experience of different cultures and develops a deeper appreciation of our trading partners. In a more global world than ever before, this experience will enhance their personal and professional lives for years to come,” said Dr Andrew Alter, Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Music Study who accompanied the students on the tour.

astronomyCelebrating diversity and equity in Astronomy

Macquarie recently hosted the Astronomical Society of Australia’s (ASA) annual workshop on Diversity and Equity overseen by the ASA’s IDEA (Inclusivity, Diversity and Equity in Astronomy) chapter. These long-running community workshops are a focal point for action, training, awareness and community-building for professional astronomers across the country. This year’s workshop was organised by staff in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, as well as studentWilfred Gee and a varied committee of veteran IDEA chapter members from around the country. With a focus on cultural diversity and spreading the message beyond traditional circles, this year’s workshop proved to be an engaging and thought-provoking event.
