University train station closure – what you need to know

You may have heard that the Macquarie University train station will be temporarily closing to accommodate major upgrades required for the new Sydney Metro Northwest line.

While the new line will obviously offer many benefits – with trains promised to run every four minutes between Rouse Hill and the city during peak hours – the potential disruption caused by the station closure is understandably causing some concern among staff who commute to the University by train.

The good news? The station closure won’t be occurring until late 2018 and the University is already working closely with key stakeholders, including Transport for NSW and Ryde Council, to ensure staff and students are provided with adequate transport alternatives.

“Our goal is to maintain smooth and uninterrupted access to the campus during the period of the station closure,” says Mark Broomfield, Director of Property. “We are currently carefully reviewing the temporary transport plan being proposed by Transport for NSW and will continue to update staff on any developments.”

We will provide further updates as they become available, and will seek input from the staff and students who may be impacted by this in due course.

  1. I need to travel to the University on Saturday, 27th April 2019 and I am in a wheelchair. What options do I have considering I have to travel from Goulburn, NSW, and there are very few trains?

    1. Hi Peter,
Trains to Macquarie are currently being replaced by the StationLink bus service, with services regularly departing from various train stations including Epping and St Leonards. According to the Stationlink website (https://transportnsw.info/plan/station-link), these buses are fully accessible with low floors. But you may wish to contact TransportNSW if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to welcoming you to the University.

  2. Honestly if need be, I’ll just become an external student whilst the train station is down for the count, but I definitely would like to know /when/ it’s going to happen and for how long so I know which of my units are going to suffer exactly. Because in all truth, I can imagine any form of alternate transport (buses, by no doubt) are going to be a hectic resolution and getting to campus will hardly be worth the extra hassle.

  3. Thats all very interesting but when exactly is it happening ie when is the line closing?? This will impact on many more people than Uni staff and students!

  4. I am hoping that TNSW is able to find a more viable solution for getting people from Epping station to Macquarie Uni. At present it is proposing to use fleets of buses. For people heading from Hornsby, buses will be travelling from Beecroft and Epping stations. Considering the already dreadful congestion of the roads in this area, how will the buses be able to negotiate the traffic? And where will TNSW get all these extra buses from? Options I have looked at for getting to work during this time are:
    – Driving, but starting and finishing really early (eg 6am-2pm)
    – Buying a motorbike or scooter (dangerous!)
    – Hiring a bike locker at Epping station and cycling to and from the University (OK in good weather but not otherwise)
    – Negotiating a couple of days a week of working from home
    – Inventing a teleporter
