Testimonial

Jake Morcom, 2016 Media graduate

Recent Macquarie University media graduate Jake Morcom recently collected a prestigious global radio award for producing some the world’s best work in radio broadcasting at the 2017 New York Radio Festival Awards. Jake works at Sydney radio station 2SER, which is jointly owned by Macquarie University. He was a producer for programs which won Gold and Silver awards in the category of Information and Documentary, ahead of tough competition.

“It’s such an honour to be nominated at such a young age, and it was through Macquarie University that I found an interest in radio.”

Macquarie has some of the best radio facilities of any Australian university. Facilities include an on-air studio with digital panel, an on-air production control room and production booth; a digital outside broadcast facility to allow for location broadcasts; and the 2SER studios. Radio is becoming increasingly multi-platform and so the facilities tie closely to the Futures Lab and MediaCentral platforms for integration across broadcast and online contexts.

Research and teaching excellence stories

Research and Teaching Excellence stories

Our undergraduate teachers are also award-winning storytellers, such as writer, filmmaker and research leader Professor Kathryn Millard. Her films are internationally recognised and much awarded. Psychology, history and the afterlife of images are recurring themes in her body of work across screen, radio and print. Most recently, her dramatised documentary Shock Room (2015) won 'Best Australian Documentary' at the Antennae Documentary Film Festival. Kathryn is currently developing further projects on landmark experiments in collaboration with social psychologists.

Other major long-form credits as writer and director include The Boot Cake (2008); Travelling Light (2003); Parklands (1996) and Light Years (1991). Kathryn's scripts-across drama and documentary, features and public broadcast-have received multiple Australian Film Institute and AWGIE (Australian Writers' Guild) nominations. Her features have won AFI Awards for 'Best Supporting Actress' and 'Best Cinematography' while Parklands introduced Cate Blanchett in her first leading role in film. Her films have been invited to dozens of major international film festivals and venues.

Alongside her work as a screenwriter, producer and director, Kathryn has written extensively for print and radio and collaborated on award-winning film and theatre projects as a script editor and dramaturg.
