Research and teaching excellence stories
Macquarie’s Faculty of Arts is home to some of Australia’s foremost researchers and experts in the humanities and social sciences.
In Excellence in Research for Australia 2015, research in history, archaeology, philosophy and religious studies received a rating of 4 out of 5 – ‘performance above world standard’.
We are proud of both our focus on multiple perspectives to global issues and the interdisciplinary nature of our research areas and taught programs, while still allowing our students to pursue specific interests in certain areas.
For example, we have an international reputation in the application of trans-disciplinary approaches to the past. Our world-leading Big History Institute fosters a highly original approach to world history. This was established from the Big History Project, co-founded by Distinguished Professor David Christian and Microsoft pioneer Bill Gates.
Big History is an emerging academic discipline which examines history from the Big Bang to the present. It examines long time frames using a multidisciplinary approach based on combining numerous disciplines from science and the humanities, and explores human existence in the context of this bigger picture.
Whatever you choose to study in humanities and social sciences, you can be confident that our expert teachers, backed by the strength of sector-leading research, will ensure you see the big picture.
