About the scholarship

The Jennifer Barton Memorial Law Scholarship recognises the potential of women in law, providing financial support as you continue your study at the Macquarie Law School. The purpose of this scholarship is to support a female student who is studying in Macquarie Law School. The scholarship is created in memory of a Macquarie Law School graduate Jennifer Barton. Passionately committed to the achievement of social justice, fiercely devoted to her family and a mentor and a friend to her associates at the Minter Ellison law firm in Sydney, Jennifer Barton was much loved and respected for her integrity, courage, intelligence, work ethic and generosity of spirit – a constant source of inspiration to her colleagues, friends and family and is greatly missed.

Duration

This scholarship is awarded for up to 1 year, subject to meeting ongoing eligibility criteria.

Criteria

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen; the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa
  • Be a female-identifying student
  • Be enrolled in their second or third year of a law degree within the Macquarie University Law School in Session 1 2024
  • Intend to study Full-Time and internally. A Full-Time waiver can be granted in instances where the student can demonstrate a need to study part time (e.g. carer responsibilities, long term medical condition, currently working part time in a law related field)
  • Be able to demonstrate some of the personal qualities of Jennifer Barton such as courage, determination, diligence, generosity of spirit and being a role model or mentor
  • Demonstrate academic merit by holding a minimum WAM of 65 or higher
