I still vividly remember how excited I was when I got my scholarship offer from Macquarie. I was one of four Chinese students to receive the Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship that year, so it was a real honour.

I completed both a Master of Environmental Planning and a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Development at Macquarie University. My bachelor degree back in China was also environment related. The environment has always been my passion, so I never really thought about pursuing a more conventional degree.

I went back to China after my son’s birth once I graduated, but I moved back to Sydney in 2013. So it took me a while to start my environmental career in Australia, but it’s right on track now.

As an environmental reporting coordinator for one of the world’s largest real estate services companies, I provide environmental reporting to meet my clients’ legislative and voluntary reporting requirements as well as identify opportunities for improvement. The work I do is beneficial for the business, the clients and the community holistically.

The lecturers I had at Macquarie were very knowledgeable, and I found Macquarie’s environment courses were more tailored than at other universities. I also made a lot of friends at Macquarie who shared my interest in the environment. They really helped broaden my mindset about working in the field.

One of the highlights of my time at Macquarie was getting to go on some amazing field trips to explore Australian flora and fauna. I still remember one field trip to Jervis Bay where I saw a kangaroo first thing in the morning. It was amazing!

The scholarship really motivated me to keep up the good work at uni. It definitely helped me both financially and professionally.

Make a positive difference with an environment degree. Our pioneering approach has seen us ranked among the world’s top 100 universities for Earth and marine sciences by QS.
