Help set their career in motion

Parents have told us they need information to have meaningful conversations that help their son or daughter make the right decisions – decisions that inspire them, prepare them for tomorrow’s world of work and support their wellbeing.

Once your son or daughter reaches Year 10, it’s time for them to start thinking about how they can turn their interests into a career. You can help them to follow their passions, choose the right combination of subjects in Years 11 and 12, and ensure they meet the entry requirements for the courses that interest them.

Year 10

  • Start talking to your child about their interests and what they’d like to do after school
  • Attend uni open days, info sessions and career expos together
  • Start gathering information about interesting courses and their entry requirements
  • Plan HSC subject selection – your child will need to complete 10 units of ATAR courses to enter university
  • Discuss the value of extracurricular courses in senior years – these could help boost their ATAR through adjustment factors and be used to support their application for our Leaders and Achievers early entry scheme.

Student support

It can be difficult for year 10 students to know where to start. If they’re not sure which career is right for them, we recommend suggesting they pursue what they enjoy, what interests or what inspires them. Then look for courses that will allow them to develop those passions. For more information, suggest your son or daughter books a 1:1 consultation with a student adviser.
