Short Term Exchange - University of Vienna (January)
Since 2005, Macquarie University has been sending Law students to the University of Vienna in the January break. The University of Vienna is a strong Law school, particularly in the area of International Law.
The University of Vienna is one of the oldest universities in the German-speaking world. The University of Vienna (German: Universität Wien) is a public university located in Vienna, Austria. It was founded by Duke Rudolph IV in 1365 and is one of the oldest universities in the German-speaking world.

Accommodation: As it is part of the usual semester period at the University of Vienna, university accommodation is not available for students from the group. Students are required to make their own accommodation arrangements. Some students prefer to stay in private apartment rentals and other students have stayed in long term hostels. This cost is estimated at 350 – 500 euros for the duration of the program.
More Information: Students will study three intensively taught courses at Vienna (7 ECTS). Please see the MQ equivalencies attached. The students will have the possibility to participate in some of the activities offered by the voluntary student organisation ERASMUS Student Network (ESN). In the past years, such events included for example a visit to the Austrian parliament, learning how to dance Viennese Waltz or having dinner at a restaurant famous for its Wiener Schnitzel. The exact program will be determined a few weeks before the courses begin and some events require a minimum number of participants. To be eligible for this program, you must meet the following criteria:
- Enrolled into an undergraduate law degree at Macquarie,
- In your 4th/5th year of Law at MQ,
- Minimum GPA: 2.5/4.0 or equivalent (places are limited and will be allocated on academic merit).
- Satisfy other criteria specified in the Student Exchange Policy.

Application Fee and Payment Options: For all exchange programs (semester and short term), there is a compulsory application fee. For more information and payment options please refer to the Payment Website
Logistics Fees: Students will have to pay a Students' Union Fee will be 19.20€ directly to Vienna, information will be provided to students in program.
Insurance: It is a requirement of the exchange program that all students must purchase their own travel insurance to cover them for the duration of their entire journey overseas. More information will be given to students upon acceptance.
Program Costs: You remain enrolled at Macquarie University and continue to pay your tuition fees to Macquarie University. As an exchange student you pay no tuition fees to host university. However, you must also always be prepared for unexpected expenses, and should consider how you will be dealing with the expenses of your exchange before you leave your home country. Prior to departure, you will need to save sufficient funds to cover all of your expenses for the duration of your exchange. Some costs to consider include: airfares, students visa (if required), travel health insurance, accommodation, food, additional travel, entertainment, textbooks, incidental expense. If you wish to work while you are away, it is important to note that work rights for international students vary from country to country. For further information about your visa restrictions please contact the consulate or embassy of your host country.
